Under direct supervision, performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks related to facilities maintenance, landscaping, buildings and grounds, and minor equipment/vehicle maintenance and repair. Learns to perform mechanical duties commonly performed in the operation of wastewater treatment plant, pump stations, and recycled water facilities. Field and shop mechanical tasks are performed in conformance with applicable regulations, codes, and standard operating procedures.
This is an apprentice-level classification.The duties of this classification involve work which is physical in nature and require working knowledge of routine and less complex facilities maintenance and laborer tasks and technical skills related to the maintenance and repair of industrial and/or heavy equipment and machinery. The Maintenance Worker may be required to operate a variety of equipment, machinery and vehicles, and may work alone or as a member of a crew. Some independent judgment and initiative is required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the Maintenance Supervisor, and direction from the Maintenance Manager and upper management in the chain of command. Receives functional supervision from higher level classifications in the Maintenance Mechanic series.
Incumbent works under the immediate supervision of journey and/or lead level staff while performing various duties and tasks when assigned to work with maintenance, collections, and electrical/ instrumentation personnel.

General Maintenance
- Peforms general maintenance tasks to ensure clean, orderly and safe working conditions throughout the District using a variety of hand and power tools and equipment related to the work. Reports unsafe conditions and mitigates as possible.
- Inspects buildings and grounds for safety hazards or maintenance needs, prepares and submits service requests. Cleans and removes debris and trash from parking lots, shops, buildings and grounds.
- Performs variety of custodial and general housekeeping duties to ensure office buildings, meeting rooms, and common areas are clean and in proper working order. Cleans up spills and breakage, washes, vacuums, sweeps, mops and dusts as required.
- Washes and cleans vehicles; fuels vehicles; conducts vehicle safety and emergency equipment inspections. Performs routine servicing and maintenance checks (changes oil, fluids, filters, batteries, bulbs and fuses) on vehicles and carts.
- Cleans heavy equipment, trucks and tools.
- Completes minor maintenance and repair work orders as instructed.
- Conducts monthly safety inspections of fire extinguishers.
- Attends training and safety sessions as assigned.
- Identifies and obtains materials, supplies and equipment needed to accomplish maintenance and repair projects.
- Prepares walls, ceilings and floors, metal, asphalt and cement surfaces for repairs, alterations and painting. cuts and removes existing wood and metal materials and structures. Sands and patches surfaces.
- Assists and supports Maintenance Division personnel with a variety of tasks and special project duties as required.
- Drives, operates, and performs minor maintenance and service on District vehicles, machinery, and equipment as required.
- Observes appropriate safety procedures, including wearing appropriate safety equipment, including personal protective equipment (PPE).
System Equipment Repair and Replacement
- Learns to assist electrical and instrumentation workers disassemble, install and reassemble system equipment during instrumentation repair projects.
- Learns to update work order system and add repair information to equipment records.
- Learns to perform a range of maintenance and repair duties while learning how to use and operate equipment and other shop tools used in welding, fabrication, rigging, pipe fitting, and other related duties.
- Removes dirt and grease; changes oil, filters, bulbs, belts and batteries; lubricates, adjusts and calibrates water and wastewater system gauges, control mechanisms, pumps, valves, engines, motors, boilers, heat exchangers, blades, chemical feed systems, pipes and underground installations.
- Learns to inspect and identify current condition of parts.
- Services, repairs and replaces building heating, cooling and plumbing systems; doors, locks, ceilings, floors and walls.
General Operations: Participates in the general housekeeping and administrative record keeping operations of the Maintenance division. Assists maintenance mechanics, electrical/ instrumentation technicians, collection system workers, and warehouse personnel with assigned work and projects, including assisting and performing welding, cutting, burning, brazing, and fabrication as needed. Assumes responsibility for covering a part of the work assignments of other maintenance personnel as needed. Participates in teams engaged with process and customer service improvements, cross-training, and team evaluations. Participates in District committees. Performs other assigned work consistent with the responsibilities of the classification and necessary to effective Maintenance Division and District operations.
A combination of training and experience which demonstrates that a person has obtained the required knowledge and is able to perform the required work (with reasonable accommodation, if needed). A person with the following combined training and experience would typically qualify to compete in a selection process:
EDUCATION: High School Diploma or equivalent, supplemented by training in the building trades or industrial equipment maintenance and repair.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum of one (1) year experience in the construction, maintenance and repair of facilities, buildings and ground, and/or industrial equipment/ machinery. Mechanical aptitude, welding, fabrication, and pump repair experience highly desirable. An equivalent combination of education, experience, and training may fulfill this requirement.
