Kamehameha Schools (KS) Maui is one of three (3) campuses in our K-12 education system and home to 1,100 students and 250 faculty and staff. We are seeking a College and Career Counselors to support our Lower Division which consists of grades K-5. The College and Career Counselors will be supporting students and families in developing personalized post-high plans to achieve their College and Career aspirations. This includes discussions over career, college, scholarship and financial aid opportunities. The ideal candidate will have related experience working with students in varying age groups, excellent verbal and written communication, and ability to consult, advise and guide students and families on future career and educational pathways.
Job Summary
The College Counselor provides college counseling and guidance for K-12 counseling program. Responsible for all aspects of college application and admission process. Works closely with Grade Level counselors to assist students with a college planning, application and admissions; assists students and parents in college research and post high opportunities; teaches large and small group guidance relevant to the college preparation; conducts evening college workshops to update important changes and developments in college admissions and financial aid for parents and students (Day and Boarding); maintains resource center with the latest college admissions information; serves as representatives to the College Board; coordinate college representative visits.
Essential Responsibilities
  • Meets with students to explore college options and assist in determining where students will apply to college. Discusses the application process and individual college choices. Plans and conducts evening workshops on College Planning and Preparation for Oahu and neighbor island parents. Assists students and their parents in considering various and realistic post-high educational opportunities.
  • Works closely with Grade Level Counselors on College Board Exams and other related post high planning and preparation. Writes an official letter of recommendation and completes secondary school reports for college application process and initiate and guide completion of college applications for seniors.
  • Collaborates with Grade Level Counselors to teach guidance classes focused on topics related to college application; admissions, matriculation and retention.
  • Processes all facets of college applications and provides pertinent information for students and parents regarding college planning process.
  • Remains current on best practices for college counseling by engaging in Professional Development relevant to college admissions, retention and completion. Establishes and maintains contact with college officials and hosts college representatives during their visits. Updates supervisor and other administrators on information pertinent to the college counseling program.
  • Organize, implement, monitor, placement and evaluation of student internships, job shadow, enrichment programs or other career related experiences relevant to the student’s career pathway choices.
  • Network with community / external agencies to assist with the development of internship, job shadow and other career related experiences.
  • Supervises students at designated events (i.e. baccalaureate practice; Founder's Day, PSAT, etc.).
  • Provides services to Kamehameha School alumni seeking guidance or post-secondary educational programs, financial aid or scholarships.
  • Organize and schedule daytime and/or evening parent workshops to support student post-secondary goals and opportunities.
Position Requirements
Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.
  • Master's degree in Counseling and Guidance to include coursework in adolescent behaviors, growth & development; tests & measurements; & guidance teaching & curriculum.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills needed to communicate effectively with students, parents, school administrators, and college representatives.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills needed to create informational documents and letters of recommendation.
  • Excellent organizational skills needed to coordinate a large variety of functions and activities.
  • Ability to work evenings attending college related parent workshops and presentations as well providing college counseling to the boarding community.
  • Ability to effectively use technology to support college counseling process.
  • Intermediate or better level of technology use and application.
  • Ability to travel to various locations, including neighbor islands and mainland US to conduct business.
  • Ability to work evening and weekend hours as required to meet goals and objectives.
Preferred Requirements
  • 2 years of directly related experience.
  • Experience in college application and admissions process.
  • Knowledge and ability to utilize current technology tools in college counseling.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.
  • Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.
Working Conditions
  • This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands or mainland US to conduct business.
  • Work is conducted in an office environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours.

Placement in the compensation range outlined below considers highest degree/educational credentials acquired from an accredited institution, and the number of full-time, verified years of eligible and related work experience. Salary is also adjusted to the appropriate work year.
