IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

These positions are Seasonal/Part-Time, Non-Benefited.
Candidates must be available to work a varied schedule to meet program needs,
including weekdays, weekends, and holidays as needed.
**It is mandatory to work the City's 3rd of July Celebration on July 3, 2024.**

The City of Orange is currently programming for Summer 2024. All programs will adhere to California Department of Public Health guidelines to maintain a safe environment for all staff and patrons. Please note that programming is subject to change or cancel, and employment/hours are not guaranteed.
DEFINITION
To supervise the pool area including the enforcement of regulations; to perform rescues as needed; and to organize and provide swim instruction.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry/journey level class where incumbents require limited time on the job before being capable of functioning at the full journey level. Incumbents initially work under immediate supervision, progressing to general supervision, as the incumbent becomes able to independently perform the full range of duties associated with this level. The incumbent is expected to be able to perform at the full journey level within a relatively short period of time.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the Recreation Services Coordinator, Pool Manager, and/or Assistant Pool Manager. Assigned duties require the exercise of judgment or choice among possible actions, sometimes without clear precedents and often with concern for the consequences of the action. The employee may or may not work in proximity to his/her supervisor.
The following duties represent the principal job duties; however, they are not all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Management reserves the rights to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.
Organize and provide swim instruction.
  • Supervise the pool area.
  • Enforce pool regulations and rules.
  • Rescue and/or assist persons in the pool as needed.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
  • Basic swimming strokes.
  • Water rescue procedures and techniques.
  • Professional Rescuer CPR and First Aid.
  • Basic pool regulations and safety procedures.
  • Principles, practices, procedures and techniques of swim instruction.

Ability to:
  • Continuously swim 300 yards using front crawl or breaststroke or a combination of both and tread water for two (2) minutes.
  • Perform rescues as needed.
  • Enforce pool rules and regulations.
  • Instruct pool users in proper swimming techniques.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
  • Provide quality customer service.
Experience:
One year of seasonal aquatic program experience is highly desirable. Examples include: Swim Instructor/Lifeguard, swim team, water polo, Junior Lifeguards, or swim lessons.
Education:
Equivalent to the completion of the tenth (10th) grade by June 10, 2024 is required, and must be at least 16 years of age by May 16, 2024; ability to provide a work permit, if required.
License or Certificate:
Possession of, or ability to obtain:
  • Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certificate, desired by June 10, 2024 to teach swim lessons.
  • Lifeguard (LG) Training Certificate, which includes Professional Rescuer CPR and First Aid, required by May 16, 2024. Note: City will cover the cost of these required certificates upon contingent job offer (for courses taken through the City of Orange).

PLEASE NOTE: ALL CANDIDATES ARE SUBJECT TO A FULL BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION INCLUDING LIVESCAN FINGERPRINTING.
Must possess the ability to perform work that may involve lifting children and adults, in and out of the pool up to 150 pounds or more with assistance, pulling a cover over the pool surface with assistance, and lifting, straightening, and moving pool deck furniture and equipment. Must possess the mobility to stand, stoop, reach, bend, climb, and swim, while in swim wear. Must be in good physical condition to stay in water for prolonged periods of time, work in extreme heat and/or cold, and the outdoors. Vision, which may be corrected; and hearing, which must be in a normal range as measured by a standard audiogram, should be good enough to see and hear adults and children in life and/or health safety endangering situations. Must also possess the mobility to work in an office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office and duplicating equipment and cash register. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information.

Requires the ability to coordinate hands and feet in performing simple movements, such as bending, reaching and grasping; to exert a moderate amount of physical effort in frequent standing and walking; tasks may involve walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, or working in confined spaces. Tasks involve the operation of water safety equipment in which manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination are important ingredients of safe operation. Tasks may require exposure to extreme heat, extreme weather conditions, strong odors and/or smoke, dust, pollen, loud noise. Tasks require visual, depth and sound perception and discrimination as well as oral communications ability.

Environmental Elements:
Employees work outdoors and are exposed to variable weather conditions. May be exposed to chlorine, acids, and other chemicals at aquatics facilities, as well as blood and body fluids rendering first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
