And here's the kicker – you don't need to be the next Olympic swimmer to join our crew. All you need is a passion for the water and the ability to get certified.

Position Details



As a Lifeguard for Rapid City Aquatics you will be responsible for performing all aspects of lifeguarding to maintain the safety of patrons.


Essential duties and responsibilities include the following, other duties may be assigned:

  • Monitors the swimming pool and surrounding facility to ensure the safety of all facility users.
  • Patrols and enforces pool safety regulations and department policies and procedures to prevent accidents and maintain order.
  • Responds to emergency situations and assist or rescue swimmers in distress utilizing established rescue techniques.
  • Administers first aid to injuries suffered by swimmers and administers cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as necessary.
  • Keep patrons informed of pool rules and regulations.
  • May perform custodial services to maintain a clean and orderly facility.
  • May be assigned swim instructor duties.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Serves as a primary lifeguard on shift.
  • Supervises other lifeguards and assists in training and orientation.
  • Supervises the swimming pool and surrounding facility to ensure the safety of all facility users.
  • Patrols and enforces pool safety regulations and department policies and procedures to prevent accidents and maintain order.
  • Complies, records and maintains simple data including accident reports.

Candidates should have reliable transportation, a flexible schedule, and the availability to work both during the week and on weekends.Days and hours may vary.

Minimum Qualifications


  • Age:
    Must be 15 years or older.
  • Education/Experience: No previous experience needed
  • Certificates/Licenses/Registrations: Must have completed American Red Cross CPR-PR, Lifeguard, and First Aid training. (See below for more information).
  • Physical Demands:Must have the ability to sit or stand for long periods of time. An employee will frequently be required to walk, swim, bend, squat, kneel, climb stairs, use hand and finger dexterity, use eye-to-hand coordination, reach below shoulders, lift over 50 lbs, and lift from arm level. An employee will occasionally be required to balance, run, push, pull, and crawl.
  • Work Environment: This position may work indoors or outside depending on the assigned location. Will constantly be exposed to wet surroundings and loud noise. Will frequently be exposed to high temperatures, humidity, pool, and cleaning chemicals. The noise level outside is usually medium to high.

Rapid City Aquatics is offering a Blended Learning Lifeguard course for the American Red Cross
Lifeguard/Water Park/CPR for the Pro/AED/First Aid certifications.
This format requires students to complete the online coursework before attending the class in person. Candidates who are registered for the course will have access to practice swimming at the Swim Center (recommended).
Lifeguard candidates must be 15 years old by the last day of the class.

Candidates must attend each session, complete the online coursework before attending classroom sessions, pass written tests, and complete all physical skills to pass. No refunds.
Pre-Course Swim Requirements
  • 300-yard continuous swim of front crawl and/or breaststroke. Swimming on back or side is not permitted. Goggles are allowed.
  • Tread water, legs only and without support or stopping, for two minutes. Candidate should have hands under armpits and head must remain above the surface of the water.
  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, use surface dive to retrieve a 10-pound brick from 7-10 feet deep water, swim 20 yards back to the starting point, and exit the water without the use of a ladder or steps. During the swim with the brick, the face must be out of the water and both hands must be on the brick. Candidate has 1 minute 40 seconds to complete this skill; goggles are not allowed.
