Job description

Under general supervision, performs daily work assignments for the Recreation Center Division of the Parks and Recreation Department, in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures, City of Alamogordo Ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal authority.

Required:

  • One (1) year or full pool season of experience working as a Lifeguard;
  • School or work experience that shows a level of maturity necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of lifeguarding. This can be shown by completion of the American Red Cross program or other certification programs, membership in clubs, teams, or organizations that show the ability to be dependable and reliable;
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Certification (PRC); and
  • Completion of a swim test to verify swimming abilities. Testing may include, but is not limited to, one or more of the following elements: timed swim, distance swim, object retrieval, and/or rescue techniques.

Desired:

  • One (1) year or full pool season of experience teaching swim lessons; and
  • Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification (WSI).
  • Responsible for enforcement of all pool rules and regulations by using preventative lifeguarding practices;
  • Provides rescue, resuscitation, and basic first aid and CPR to patrons as necessary;
  • Follows the emergency action plan during emergency situations requiring rescue due to drowning, an accident, injury, or other situation where a patron or employee may be harmed;
  • Performs cleaning duties and maintains the restrooms and pool area in a safe and sanitary manner;
  • Swims at least one hour per week (on the clock);
  • Follows standards set for a lifeguard on duty;
  • Teaches swimming lessons as scheduled;
  • Inspects pool, equipment, and pool facility on a regular basis to ensure proper maintenance through reporting of and subsequent repair of discrepancies;
  • Attends meetings and training classes as required;
  • Operates emergency equipment and utilizes first aid supplies;
  • Responsible for keeping current on knowledge of pool rules, regulations, guard rotation procedures, the emergency action plan, and preventative lifeguarding practices;
  • Contributes to a high-quality work culture through participation in training and mentoring to develop skills, including safety-related training and skills;
  • Interacts professionally and provides excellent customer service to all levels of City staff and citizens, to ensure high operational and service standards; and
  • Performs duties in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures, City of Alamogordo Ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal authority.

Recreation Duties:

  • Provide assistance as assigned for winter recreation programs including but not limited to Youth Basketball League, After School Frenzy, School Release/Holiday Week Programs, and Home School PE;
  • Act as site or youth lead for recreation programs as needed (i.e., Youth Basketball School Gym Attendant, substitute for Youth Recreation Aide staff, Christmas Tree Lighting Event Staff); and
  • Work special events including but not limited to Military Appreciation Day, 4th Fridays, Easter in the Park, Zoo Boo, and parades.

OTHER IMPORTANT DUTIES

  • May provide guidance and/or instruction to Seasonal Lifeguards, as assigned;
  • Maintains the confidentiality of information obtained during the performance of duties; and
  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Acceptable industry standards for lifeguarding.

Skill/Ability to:

  • Maintain the necessary certifications for lifeguarding;
  • Maintain the necessary certifications for teaching swimming lessons if valid certifications are held at the time of hire;
  • Maintain physical fitness by swimming at least one hour per week (on the clock);
  • Work well with others and participate fully in a team-oriented environment;
  • Interface with other employees and customers in a courteous and respectful manner;
  • Project positive support of the department and all City organizations at all times;
  • Maintain and enhance the Recreation Center's commitment to customer service excellence;
  • Demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication; understand and follow instructions;
  • Attend work, as scheduled and on a regular basis, to effectively perform the position's essential duties and responsibilities; and
  • Exercise common sense and good judgment in the performance of essential duties.
  • Work is primarily performed outside with exposure to heat, sunburn, varied weather conditions, odors, dust, and pollen;
  • Must be able to see well enough to identify swimmers and observe behavior; hear well enough to distinguish the sound of someone calling for help in a noisy outdoor environment, and speak well enough to be understood in a noisy environment;
  • Requires strength and stamina to sit and stand for extended periods of time, walk on uneven and slippery surfaces, grasp, bend, reach, twist, kneel, and squat;
  • Must be able to climb ladders and ascend and descend stairs;
  • Lift and/or move items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds; the lifting of any object greater than fifty (50) pounds by a single individual is prohibited. Lifting objects, materials, or equipment weighing more than fifty (50) pounds require the buddy system or the use of devices designed to assist with lifting or moving. Proper lifting techniques shall be used when lifting items of any weight;
  • May be exposed to chemicals, skin irritants, and pathogens;
  • May be exposed to stressful emergency situations; and
  • Position requires a varied work schedule that may include early mornings, days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events.
