Job description

DEFINITION
Under direct supervision of the Leisure Services Superintendent, assists the public in the safe use of City aquatic facilities, responsible for the overall cleanliness and look of the Recreation Center aquatic facilities and assist with various aquatics programs.
  1. Serve as a representative of the City of Mesquite, demonstrating a positive attitude and progressive actions through the display of professionalism, courtesy, and appropriate tact and discretion in all interactions with other employees and with the public.
  2. Safeguard and regulate the conduct of patrons to prevent unsafe practices and accidents.
  3. Maintain a constant vigil over patrons in an assigned area; rescuing persons in distress; make frequent facility and equipment checks for safety.
  4. Responsible for the day to day cleanliness of the Recreation center by performing light facility maintenance and custodial duties including, but not limited to cleaning swimming pool decks and furniture, clean scum gutters, locker rooms, lifting, sweeping, disposing of waste, vacuuming, and washing windows.
  5. Enforce pool safety rules and regulations.
  6. Monitor swimming and other pool activities to prevent accidents.
  7. Develop cooperative relationships with pool patrons to ensure positive public relations.
  8. Maintain a high level of communication with patrons, staff, media, supervisors, and other department staff.
  9. Assist in the proper maintenance and sanitary operation of the pool.
  10. Administers cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid to the injured, and calls Emergency Medical Services (EMS) on serious accident cases.
  11. Assist with the operation of the slide during the operation of the outdoor pool.
  12. May assist in teaching swimming techniques or instruct aquatic activity.
  13. Be dependable and meet acceptable attendance requirements at all times.
  14. Follow all applicable safety rules and regulations.
Knowledge of:
  • Standard Red Cross First Aid practices.
  • Water hazards, life saving techniques and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Swimming pool operations, safety rules and regulations, rules and regulations relating to Recreation Center Aquatics programs, and water rescue methods and procedures.
Ability to:
  • Make correct decisions and act quickly in emergencies.
  • Render latest approved First Aid and artificial respiration procedures if needed.
  • Avoid conversation with public or engage in other distraction while on the lifeguard stand.
  • Able to follow oral and written instructions.
  • To be highly motivated, responsible, enthusiastic, and a team player.
  • Work a flexible schedule which may include some evenings, weekends, and holiday shifts.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other personnel.
Experience, Education and Training:
Any equivalent combination of training, education and experience which provides the individual with the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Education: Must be at least 16 years old.
Experience: One or more seasons of experience as a lifeguard are desirable.
Training
License or Certificate: Must possess at the time of employment and continuously throughout employment a valid Nevada or "border state" driver's license, as defined by NRS 483, Lifeguard Certifications, current First Aid and CPR Certificates.

Work is performed under the following conditions.
Subject to high levels of public contact and frequent interruptions; work closely with others.
Physical Requirements:
Conditions include constant bending, reaching, walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time where employees are exposed to excessive noise, sun and wind during operation of outdoor pool, frequent climbing, kneeling, stooping, and bending; moderate mental effort required. General manual dexterity, audiovisual and linguistic acuity are required. Learn through oral instruction in and on-the-job training setting. Must be able to carry/lift/push or pull loads up to 100lbs.
Job Hazards/Risk Factors:
Employee risks physical hazards from mechanical and electrical equipment, exposure to pool chemicals, working in and around chemicals and hazardous gases.
Position is considered safety sensitive and is subject to drug testing.
