Job description

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Facilities Division has an opening for a Life Safety Supervisor to join the team.

This role is responsible for the Life Safety Systems for over 100 buildings in support of the Lab's mission. You will oversee the Fire Protection/Life Safety related systems throughout the Lab, which include fire alarm, fire sprinkler, fire barrier  as well as provide leadership and technical direction to the Life Safety/fire alarm electricians. 

 

This position will support operational efforts to include emergency response, corrective and preventive/predictive maintenance (PM) of building systems, equipment, and utility infrastructure by working with the Work Planning Control team to ensure execution of maintenance tasks utilizing the Lab's Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), MAXIMO. The Life Safety Supervisor routinely interacts with customers, other supervisors, planners, and schedulers. 

 

What You Will Do: 

  • Responsible for the successful direction and guidance of a group of skilled craft workers in support of a range of Life Safety systems, including fire alarms, fire extinguishers, and fire sprinklers. 

  • Provide supervision to staff, including guidance for the safe and effective operation, responsible for hiring, training, evaluation, performance management, and timely correction of problems. 

  • Responsible for ensuring local, state, and federal Fire and Safety codes, guidelines, regulations are met in the installation, programming, maintenance, repair, commissioning, and inspections of responsible systems. 

  • Responsible for providing a broad range of technical expertise, support, and supervision to support the successful installation and maintenance of fire alarm systems and fire extinguishers, reviewing fire alarm designs and installation, operations, programming, maintenance, inventory, and testing in accordance with state and federal guidelines and regulations. 

  • Responsible for supporting the successful execution of preventative maintenance activities, coordinating emergency repairs, and planning and implementation of minor facilities alterations. 

  • Effectively manage performance by ensuring objectives and performance expectations are clearly communicated. Perform On-the-Job (OJT) to prepare employees for tasks and assignments associated with work activity. 

  • Provide oversight, guidance, and supervision of work activities; perform performance evaluations using formal and informal methods/tools such as Simple But Needed (SBN) tools. Coach employees on safety and job hazards and document findings in the SBN Tool.

  • Provide front-line support of technical, DOE contract compliance, and safety regulations by handling inquiries, routine problem diagnosis, and resolutions during normal and off hours. 

  • Provide technical support and demonstrate technical guidance to ensure quality of performance is executed. 

  • Perform pre-job briefings prior the start of all work to ensure scope, methods, and hazards/mitigations are understood by the assigned worker(s); may delegate this to a qualified and authorized work lead. 

  • Interface daily with LBNL facilities service peers to ensure in-house and contracted services are delivered in accordance with LBNL and DOE contract requirements. 

  • Seek to understand and deliver services based on customer specifications, values, and needs.

  • Develop and carry out the annual, monthly, weekly, and daily maintenance and operational plans. Monitor quality and service levels for each service provider.  

  • Report and drive corrective actions as needed in accordance with LBNL policies. 

  • Provide reports and metrics to management summarizing goal attainment.

  • Ensure safety and other training programs for Facilities Operations crafts are up to date.

  • Evaluate operational efficiencies and recommend improvements for future projects.

  • Work with management on continuous process improvement projects and initiatives.

 

What is Required:

  • National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) Level II or higher.

  • A minimum of 2 years of facilities maintenance supervisory experience in a complex industrial plant, laboratory facility, or corporate campus with multiple buildings AND a minimum of 3 years experience in Fire Protection/Life Safety Systems.

  • Experience in and knowledge of fire protection/Life Safety systems, both individually and in their interrelationship with each other and other engineered systems.

  • Experience with working in a union environment. 

  • Ability to read, interpret, and comprehend the intent of requirements (e.g., NFPA, CA Fire code, DOE Orders, etc.), especially pertaining to ITM, and how they apply to fire protection/Life Safety systems.

  • Ability to read, interpret, and comprehend fire protection/Life Safety system-engineered data, drawings, specifications, O&M manuals, and manufacturer's datasheets.

  • Ability to interface effectively with the Fire Marshal's Office, Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), stakeholders, contractors, and LBNL staff to complete tasks and responsibilities successfully.

  • Demonstrated experience in the implementation of fire protection/Life Safety systems ITM activity in accordance with the governing codes, standards, and requirements.

  • Ability to develop clear and concise procedures governing any aspect of the ITM activities in accordance with requirements (e.g., LBNL, NFPA, CA, DOE, etc.).

  • Proven record as a team leader and team player in cost-effective management support services function while meeting the needs of internal clients.

  • Broad knowledge of California Building Codes, NFPA requirements, and industry standards /practices (NICET) in the Facilities Maintenance arena. 

  • Knowledge of building maintenance and repairs, and crafts including carpentry, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, roofing, fire/Life Safety systems, general maintenance, and labor, etc. 

  • Ability to employ computer applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Maximo etc., at a level of competence to produce presentations and reports suitable for Facilities and Laboratory Management.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in Fire Protection or Mechanical Engineering, with (i) a valid California P.E. license in Fire Protection Engineering (or Fire Protection Engineering P.E. license in another state with the ability to gain reciprocity in California within 1 year of date of hire), or (ii) an EIT/FE license working on attaining a California P.E. license in Fire Protection Engineering.

  • At least 5 years experience designing, installing, and overseeing fire protection/Life Safety systems. 

  • Prefer experience with Inspection Testing and Maintenance (ITM) programs for a large institutional client, such as a federal government agency.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid).

  • The Life Safety Supervisor position is expected to pay $132,792 - $162,324 annually, which fits within the full salary range of $118,044 - $199,200 annually for the job classification of G02.1.

  • Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.

  • It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on the final candidate's qualifications and experience.
