Position Summary
The incumbent supervises all uniformed Public Safety personnel assigned to a particular platoon on the Medical Center campus and directs all operations by Public Safety personnel unless relieved by higher authority.
Responsibilities
- In addition, the lieutenant performs a broad range of administrative duties, including report writing, shift administration, payroll, and scheduling. The incumbent responds to emergency situations across the campus and directs the activities of the responding Public Safety staff. The lieutenant also determines when additional resources are needed and coordinates their response with other departments. The incumbent is responsible for resetting fire alarm systems, as required, and must possess a working knowledge of fire suppression systems across the campus.
- When assigned as a desk officer in the Operations Center, the lieutenant is responsible for maintaining and operating a host of complex computers and alarm systems and serving as a radio dispatcher for security officers. The lieutenant must demonstrate the qualities of leadership under stressful conditions. The incumbent must be able to train staff to respond to all security, medical, and fire emergencies and to initiate appropriate established response procedures. The incumbent prepares reports, reviews subordinates' reports and other paperwork, maintains accurate and complete logs and records, and patrols and staffs the Operations Desk.
- The incumbent must be able to maintain and safeguard equipment essential to the efficient operation of the Department. The lieutenant should be skilled at the use of a typewriter/computer keyboard, as well as other electronic equipment. The incumbent must be able to communicate effectively and clearly with staff and visitors in a professional manner.
- The incumbent should demonstrate a high level of ethics and maintain a professional appearance. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining and safeguarding all equipment essential to the efficient operation of the Department. The position requires the incumbent to work weekends, nights, and a variety of shifts and double shifts when circumstances warrant.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent preferred.
A minimum of 2-4 years of related experience is required. At least 3 years of supervisory experience in security/law enforcement, or related field in a complex organization. Must possess, or have the ability to obtain a NY State Guard license.
Preferred Qualifications
Must be familiar with word processing and spreadsheet software. Must have a valid driver's license. Must have good communication, writing, and interpersonal skills, high standards concerning customer service, and a good working knowledge of security and safety procedures. Must be able to remain calm and effectively manage and respond during stressful emergency situations and have good judgment in regard to security issues. Must be able to be reached by phone as a condition of employment.
