INTERNAL JOB POSTING - ONLY OPEN TO CURRENT MEMBERS OF THE MTA POLICE DEPARTMENT    

     

Job Title:Request for Consideration – Lieutenant, Professional Development     

Dept/Div:MTA Police Department/ Professional Standards    

Supervisor:    

Location:Various     

Hours:Four (4) tours of Ten Hours and Sixteen Minutes (10:16) with Three (3) consecutive rest days     

     

Summary:    

The Department is seeking qualified Lieutenants who are interested in being considered for assignment to various positions within in-service and recruit training within the Training Unit. The Department is seeking a diverse group of Lieutenants, proficient in one or more areas that include:    

  • Academic studies (law, police science, behavioral science).
  • Physical fitness (aerobic/circuit training, resistance/strength training, flexibility/balance training, etc.).
  • Skills training (crisis intervention, self-defense, ground fighting, use of force, handcuffing, firearm instruction, driver training, car stops, accident response, tactical communication, role playing).
  • Medical training (CPR, first aid, certified first responder, EMT, etc.).
  • Computer/tech training (digital report preparation, digital memo book, arrest processing, fingerprinting, online investigations, data analysis, mobile phone and apps use, LPR, GPS, BWC, radio use and communication).

     

Responsibilities:    

Qualified members will be responsible for:    

  • Supervise and train assigned staff to include Sergeants and Police Officers.
  • Oversee and direct in-service training operations.
  • Coordinate and maintain in-service training schedules.
  • Coordinate and maintain in-service instructor schedules.
  • Ensure student curriculum conforms to NYDCJS Standards.
  • Maintain instruction courses through researching and updating course curriculum and maintaining the training environments.
  • Develop curriculum and role play scenarios and research new courses.
  • Maintain all Department training records.
  • Maintain a high level of integrity and standards.
  • Monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of training delivery methods.
  • Knowledge of procurement procedures, including writing specifications for equipment and preparing training materials and correspondence.
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with trainee officers and other agency representatives.
  • Knowledge of Connecticut Penal Law and Connecticut Criminal Procedures preferred.

     

Qualifications:    

Qualified members must, at a minimum, have the following qualifications/requirements to be considered for appointment:    

  • A minimum of Five (5) years of law enforcement experience.
  • A minimum of Three (3) years of experience as a supervisor with the MTA Police Department.
  • Prior experience in MTA PD training as a supervisor and be currently certified by DCJS as a General Topics Instructor.
  • Be in the rank of Lieutenant or currently on the promotional list to be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.
  • Proficient administrative skills.  These skills are required for scheduling, record keeping, ensuring that procurement procedures are adhered to, including writing specifications for equipment, and preparing training materials and correspondence with the State of New York and Connecticut.
  • Advanced communication skills including, but not limited to, being able to interact with trainee officers and other agency representatives.

     

To be considered, members must also:    

     

•          Complete a "Candidate Application" (Form #69) and forward it to his or her immediate supervisor who shall complete the applicable sections and then forward the form through the chain of command.    

•          Successfully complete a panel interview    

•          Candidates who have substantiated discipline/suspension or who have a documented history of lateness or absenteeism not related to sickness or work injury may be removed from interview consideration or consideration for the position.

Candidates should understand that they are not guaranteed an assignment with the Training Unit, even if they meet each of the above qualifications.    

     

The Training Unit is a support unit of the MTA Police Department.  The primary goals of the unit are to provide specific job training that will improve the safety, performance, and proficiency of its members and to ensure the Department’s mission, vision, values, and standard operating procedures are clearly understood.  The Training Unit continually assesses the training needs of the Department and develops comprehensive programs to maintain professionalism in all aspects of police work.
