Job description

The County of Yolo is recruiting to fill one (1) Extra Help, position in the class of Licensed Vocational Nurse I/II I at the Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA).

The Licensed Vocational Nurse will be assigned to the mental health clinic and will assist the team in a variety of tasks related to conducting injection clinics, monitoring effectiveness of medication and noting side effects, working with the treatment team to evaluate clients' progress, assisting with medication refills/Prior authorizations, and nursing line messages, vital signs, coordinating treatment, timely documentation, and other duties as required.

This is a part time position that does not offer benefits. The incumbent will work 16-20 hours a week and will work Tuesdays in the West Sacramento clinic and Thursdays in the Woodland clinic. The level of hire will be determined by the hiring manager at the time of offer.

$24.33-$29.57/hourly

Definition
Licensed Vocational Nurses work under general supervision, assisting registered nurses in providing responsible patient care; to administer prescribed medications and treatments to patients; to supervise nursing assistants and orderlies; to prepare, maintain and distribute surgical supplies and equipment; to assist in the operating room; to administer intravenous fluids; and to perform other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the advanced working level class in the series. This class is distinguished from the Licensed Vocational Nurse I in that the advanced level class can administer intravenous fluids and requires completion of a prescribed course of instruction in intravenous therapy.

  • Provides nursing care to patients, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse;
  • Takes and records temperatures, pulse, respiration and blood pressure readings;
  • Transcribes physicians' orders to medication and treatment records;
  • Observes and reports patient's symptoms to the registered nurse or physician in charge;
  • May take verbal orders from physicians;
  • Administers routine medications and treatments as prescribed;
  • Gives injections and draws blood as directed;
  • May be assigned charge of a team of other para-professional nursing employees, and gives instructions to them;
  • May be assigned to provide primary nursing care to a designated number of patients;
  • Assists physicians and/or Registered Nurses in examinations or special procedures;
  • Catheterizes patients and gives enemas;
  • Provides general patient care;
  • Such as bathing, feeding, and turning patients;
  • Applies and changes dressings or assists therein;
  • Maintains patients' charts and other records;
  • Assists in providing service and care in medical-surgical and in-patient, out-patient setting;
  • Prepares patients for examination, treatment, or surgery;
  • Sterilizes surgical equipment and dressings as directed;
  • Relays instructions to personnel coming on duty;
  • May assist surgeons and registered nurses in major and minor operations by performing scrub nurse duties which include selecting the proper instruments and supplies as needed by the surgeon and assisting the surgeon by passing proper sterile instruments when needed;
  • Disinfects operating room, surgical instruments and equipment;
  • Administers infusion of intravenous fluids to patients and observes progress of infusions. This includes the initiation of the infusion, maintenance of infusion through the addition of simple intravenous solution, and site care;
  • and performs other related duties as required.
Licensed Vocational Nurse I:
Education: Graduation from an accredited school for vocational nursing approved by the California State Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners.
Experience: None required.
License: Possession of a current California license as a Licensed Vocational Nurse.
Licensed Vocational Nurse II:
Education: Graduation from an accredited school for vocational nursing approved by the California State Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners.
Experience: One (1) year of recent full-time experience as a Licensed Vocational Nurse and the possession of a valid certificate of satisfactory completion of a prescribed course of instruction in intravenous therapy approved by the California State Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technician examiners is required for particular hospital assignments which involve the administration of intravenous injections.
License: Possession of a current California license as a Licensed Vocational Nurse.
License: Some positions in this classification may require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid California driver's license, Class C or higher, to carry out job related duties. Knowledge of: vocational nursing methods and techniques including hospital ward routine, first aid, medications, treatments, and patient hygiene and bedside care; good knowledge of medical terminology and the care of nursing equipment and supplies; good knowledge of isolation techniques and sterile and aseptic techniques; good knowledge of the administration of enemas, hypodermics, catheterizations, and irrigations.
Ability to: ability to provide sympathetic patient care; ability to learn to operate specialized hospital equipment effectively; ability to keep accurate records; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.Application Process

Verification of Education
Acceptable forms of educational documentation are official or unofficial transcripts that list the student's name, institution name, field of study and date the degree was awarded.
For recent graduates who have not received proof of their degree yet, a letter from the registrar's office stating that all requirements for graduation have been met and listing the field of study will be sufficient proof of graduation.
Please do not send originals; copies of the required documents are acceptable. Any submitted documents will not be returned.
All foreign transcripts or diplomas must be in English. If the institution does not provide these documents in English, the applicant will need to provide a translation which has been done by a professional agency. The County of Yolo will accept education as equivalent to U.S. accreditation from Institutions that are listed as members of the International Association of Universities. Applicants who possess a degree or completed coursework that is not from an accredited college or university, must submit one of the following:
1. A written statement from a U.S. accredited university or college that states that the applicant is qualified for entrance to a program of graduate studies for which a degree in a related field is required.
2. An evaluation of the applicant's degree and coursework equivalency by a private organization that provides foreign credential evaluation services. The evaluation must include a comparison of comparable U.S. courses for content, credit and grade.
Note: Foreign language documents must include a precise word-for-word English translation of all foreign language documents. It is the responsibility of each applicant to prove to the satisfaction of the County that the applicant meets the specific requirements listed on the job announcement for each specific examination. The following is a list of private organizations that provide foreign credential evaluation services. Fees range from $50 to $400 per document; processing times vary from 5-20 business days.
