Job description

Know the range of services the practice provides and the species it treats. Keep treatment area and personal work stations clean, organized, and odor free at all times. Dispose of used sharps and hazardous waste according to OSHA standards and Central Vet's protocols.

Follow OSHA standards and be able to find Material Safety Data Sheets quickly. Be familiar with infectious diseases, including their prevention and steps to reduce or eliminate transmission. Adhere to all isolation procedures to prevent transmission of contagious or infectious disease among patients.

Understand that actions constituting animal cruelty under state or local laws, or the practice's policies, will be grounds for immediate reprimand and/or termination. Possess sufficient strength and assertiveness to effectively restrain patients for significant periods of time and ensure the safety of patients and employees at all times. Monitor patients' behaviors and note potentially aggressive behaviors; use caution when handling aggressive or potentially aggressive pets.

Safely and effectively apply and use restraint devices, including muzzles, towels, gloves, and cat bags. Assist with inventory control including notifying appropriate manager when stock runs low and restocking supplies as needed. ntake admitted patients from both the hospital and the outer clinics and follow the admitting veterinarian's protocols for work ups, treatments, and medications.

Prior to discharge, remove patients' catheters and clean patients so that no body fluids or excrement are present Monitor for any changes in a patient's condition, be able to alert doctors to significant changes, and be able to offer immediate care for critical patients. Perform routine and emergency treatments to patients as directed by a veterinarian. Perform out-patient treatments on patients as directed by a veterinarian Change oxygen tanks as needed or as directed.

Be able to hook up and maintain IV Pumps. Be able to set up IV fluid bags and change as needed according to the Veterinarian's treatment plan. Place IV catheters, administer IV Fluids, and maintain IV catheters so fluids flow freely; flush, clean, and replace as needed.

Monitor, adjust, and maintain IV infusion pumps. Properly calculate medication dosages and volumes of liquids or tablets to be administered to patients. Administer IV, IM, SQ, and oral medications.

Monitor and maintain urinary-collection bags; record urine production on charts Perform anesthesia induction, maintenance, monitoring, & recovery; clean and maintain anesthesia equipment. Be responsible for sedation, positioning, and preparation of patients for radiographs. Perform radiographs, including bladder contrasts and barium series, as directed by the veterinarian and submit to Veterinary Multi-Imaging for consults.

Create and prepare CDs with ultrasound or radiograph images for clients when requested. Prepare or assist with preparation for surgery including the proper maintenance of all surgical instruments and equipment. Provide patient dental care including scaling and polishing teeth, assisting the veterinarian with dental surgery, and taking dental radiographs.

Collect, prepare, and run or submit samples for requested laboratory tests; read and record results when indicated or requested by veterinarian. Understand Central Vet's protocols for patient emergencies and provide basic life support, including CPR, airway maintenance, and oxygen therapy. Know the location of the "Crash Cart;" check expiration dates and restock as needed.

Be able to locate and properly maintain the charts of hospitalized and boarded patients. Record examination, treatment, and diagnostic notes in the appropriate paper records and/or computerized medical records. Record and initial in both the paper and computerized patient records all oral and injectable medications administered.

Note any changes to a patient's condition, food and water intake, and elimination in the appropriate paper records and/or computerized medical records. Record the use of all controlled substances in accordance with all local and federal laws and Central Vets policy. Use warning stickers and notations on cage cards and records as appropriate This position supervises the Veterinary Technicians Assistants and Kennel Attendants.

Excellent patient care must be maintained at all times. Federal and Local laws must be followed at all times especially with regard to controlled substances. Ensure Quality Control of patient care and medical records.

Help insure safety of patients and staff at all times. Hourly pay $25-$35 based on skill and experience.
