This position is located at the State Library in Baton Rouge, LA.
This position does not require a Civil Service test score.
Position Summary: This position reports to the Coordinator, Special Services for the Talking Books and Braille Library. This position performs daily mail duties; inspects, sorts, and cleans incoming materials books and machines; duplicates tapes; and participates in planning and policy setting for the Machine and Materials unit.
50% Performs daily mail duties


  • Duplicates book requests for TBBL patrons
  • Checks-in returned cartridges
  • Repurposes recycled digital cartridges
  • Inspects incoming audio books and contacts patron is cartridges are missing
  • Re-shelves returned cartridges
  • Assists coordinator with weeding the digital collection
  • Labels materials for Duplication-on-Demand
  • Maintains work areas in a neat clean condition
  • Develops and updates workflow procedures
40% Performs assigned duties asked by direct supervisor
  • Catalogs Large Print books.
  • Oversees the recycling of audiobooks
  • Duplicates digital quarterly newsletter
  • Enter patron book requests as needed
  • Add ratings to unrated books as needed
  • Assists the Children Librarian with Early Literacy as needed
10% Understands teamwork is an essential component of TBBL and the State Library
  • Assists in the Reader Advisor Unit as needed
  • Answers telephones, or greets walk-in patrons
  • Helps the entire library by moving furniture and setting up for meetings and seminars
  • Follows safety procedures and being careful not to block fire exits
This position participates in a Career Progression Group (CPG) and may be filled as a Library Specialist 1, 2, or 3 level which will be determined by the qualifications of the candidate selected. This position provides the opportunity to advance within this job series.
The actual starting salary depends on the education and experience of the selected applicant.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
One year of experience in which clerical work was a major duty.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
Training in a business or clerical-related curriculum in a business school or technical institute will substitute for the required experience on the basis of six months of training for six months of experience.
Completion of a business or clerical-related curriculum in a business school or technical institute will substitute for the one year of required experience.
College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of 15 semester hours for six months of experience.
A baccalaureate degree will substitute for all of the required experience.
NOTE:
Business or technical school training with less than completion will only be credited in six month increments. Similarly, college training will only be credited in 15 semester hour increments.
NOTE:
Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

Library Specialists typically report to a Library Specialist Supervisor.

Differs from general clerical jobs by the presence of library paraprofessional duties.
Differs from Library Specialist 2 by the absence of experienced level duties.

Performs basic information verification tasks, using a variety of sources such as databases, indexes, catalogs, etc.
Performs exact-copy cataloging procedures to generate cataloging records.
Assists in processing order requests for library materials.
Searches library catalog for duplication of holdings and standard print/online sources for availability.
May prepare purchase orders.
Updates essential departmental records such as serials check-in, bindery, documents shelflist, circulation, etc.
Provides general library information and directional assistance to patrons. Instructs patrons in the use of library systems and equipment.
Assists in the physical arrangement of materials such as shelving, shelf reading, and checking for accuracy of shelved materials.
May initiate claims for materials not received.
Copies bibliographic records from an external database to a local system.
Performs routine catalog maintenance tasks such as correcting errors, processing transfers/withdrawals, updating holdings, and processing added copies/volumes.
Inputs invoice data into automated acquisitions system.
Collects and compiles data to be used in statistical reports.
Monitors the physical processing of new materials.
May assist in the routine maintenance of audio-visual equipment, microform reader/printers, photocopiers, etc.
