The City of Torrance Community Services Department is looking for Library Pages who can work at the central and branch Libraries!
The Department
The Community Services Department offers Torrance residents the unique opportunity to help achieve a sense of purpose, identity, self-worth and improved self-esteem within the specialized areas of Cultural Arts, Library, Parks and Recreation.
The Division
The Torrance Public Library provides outstanding services, exceptional resources, and accessible spaces to support an independent, literate, and informed community.
The PositionThe Torrance Public Library is seeking Library Pages toperform basic library functions such as answering telephones and simple directional inquiries; checking out books and other materials to patrons; checking in materials; shelving, straightening, and retrieving books and other materials; maintenance and repair of library materials; shelf searching for lost items; routine typing and filing; mail and supply delivery and distribution; audio-visual setup; and stocking and troubleshooting printers/copiers.

HOURS: This is a recurrent, part-time, non-civil service, as needed position. Pages typically work 4 hours per day, including evenings and Saturdays.
QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience that would have provided the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
This is an entry level position with no specific education or experience requirement. High school graduation or equivalent is preferred. Students applying for this position must be at least sixteen (16) years of age, enrolled in high school at Grade 10 or higher and be able to secure a work permit prior to employment.
Successful candidates will possess the following:
  • Ability to work year-round, approximately 20 hours per week, including evenings and weekends. Library work hours are scheduled between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. depending on day of week and location.
  • Ability to interact courteously and tactfully with the public and staff
  • Exhibit strong written and verbal communication abilities;
  • Possess exceptional attention to detail;
  • Ability to work as part of a team and also thrive in independent work
  • Familiarity with current technologies, including the ability to operate a personal computer and use applicable software.

BENEFIT SUMMARY FOR TORRANCE LIBRARY EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION (TLEA)
Note: Not all benefits listed may be applicable to all positions with in the unit. Please refer to the MOU for specifics.
Health, Dental, Vision and Life Insurance (sec. 4.2)
The City's monthly contribution for health insurance is as follows:

The City's monthly contribution for vision insurance is $3.33
The City's monthly contribution for dental insurance is $33.71/EE only and $67.42/EE +1 or more
The City provides a Cash In-Lieu payment of $400 per month for eligible full-time employees for as long as the employee opts-out of medical coverage
City provides a $50,000 life insurance policy
(Part-Time Section I employees qualify for 50% of benefits)
Section II employees receive PRO RATED BENEFITS for Insurance, Retirement, Sick Leave and Vacation. NOT ELIGIBLE for Disability, Life Insurance or Industrial Accident
Premium Pay (sec. 3.2)
Lead Worker Librarian: 5% premium
Night Shift Differential (sec. 3.3)
Paid 10% over and above base hourly pay inclusive of longevity pay when ½ or more of the shift is scheduled to work after 4:00 p.m. or before 8:00 a.m. (Branch employees night shift defined as ½ or more of the shift if scheduled to work after 3:00 p.m.)
Disability Insurance (sec. 4.2)
Employee receives 2/3 base pay after elimination period (14 consecutive days for STD and 180 consecutive days for LTD)
*Section II employees: Cost of SDI benefit will be paid by employee using the benefit.
Retirement (sec. 4.4)

13 paid holidays (New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Lincoln's Birthday, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day, The day after Thanksgiving, Labor Day, The last working day prior to Christmas, Christmas Day & the last working day prior to New Year's Day).
Value of Holidays
Full-time Employees: normal work shift- either eight (8), nine (9), or ten (10) hours
Part-time Empoyees: four (4) hours per holiday except Independence Day for six (6) hours and Christmas Day for five (5) hours
*Employee must work at least one hour in the pay period or use one hour of approved paid leave time in the pay period, to be eligible for holiday pay.
Sick Leave/Personal Leave (sec. 4.6)
Section I and Senior Library Pages: Accrue 6 hours per month. Max. accrual: 600 hours
Library Pages: granted 16 hours per year. Eigible to use a max. of 24 hours per year, but no more than 48 hours in two (2) consecutive years. Accrue one (1) hour per thirty (30) hours. 48 hours max. accrual per year.
Vacation Leave (sec. 4.8) (4.9)
Section I: Vacation accrual rate per month
Years 1 -2 : 9.33 hours; Year 3: 10 hours; Year 4: 10.67 hours; Years 5 - 9: 12.67 hours; Years 10 - 20: 16.02 hours; Years 21 - 24: 17.33 hours; Year 25+: 18.00 hours
Library Pages: Vacation accrual rate
At the rate of 24 hours per year. Years 5-9: 44 hours, Year 10: 64 hours
Bereavement Leave (sec. 4.10)
Up to five (5) work shifts of bereavement leave; three (3) shifts with pay and two (2) shifts without pay per death of eligible family members
Deferred Compensation (sec 4.13) (sec 4.14)
Section I Employees
457 Plan: Enrollment is voluntary
Upon completion of year one, Section I employees receive a non-matching deferred City contribution of $300 ($11.54 per pay period) per calendar year.
Section II Employees
Section II employees participate in mandated City deferred compensation program in lieu of Social Security: when total deferred amount becomes $5,000, employee may move funds to Plan A of the deferred compensation program.
Educational Material Allowance (sec. 5.4)
Librarian, Library Technician, and Senior Library Technician: $333 annually (paid in September)
