Job description

Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.

This position is represented by the Anchorage Municipal Employee Association (AMEA) and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the AMEA.

DEPARTMENT: Library
HOURS OF WORK: Tuesday through Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with Wednesday 11:15 a.m. to 8:15 p.m.
LOCATION OF WORK: 3600 Denali Street

Support the mission, vision, values, and strategic plan of the Anchorage Public library. Provide computer assistance and readers' advisory services to patrons in person, over the phone, or electronically. Instruct the public on the use of library resources including the online catalog, library databases, and the Internet. Provide staff support for outreach and library programs. Ensure excellent customer service and a positive patron experience. Assist in the collection maintenance. Support Adult Services staff by ordering supplies, maintaining the community board, and providing assistance to the library's marketing plan. With other duties as assigned.

High school, GED, or the equivalent and eighteen (18) months of customer service experience and/or library experience.
OR
Associate's degree in Library Science or a related discipline and six (6) months of customer service experience and/or library experience.
Preferences:

  • 2 years library experience
  • Clerical experience
  • Prefer applicants who have experience working with diverse people, including children, adults, the elderly and vulnerable populations.

Preference will be given to Anchorage Municipal Employees Association (AMEA) employees. AMEA employees who are successful in the screening process will be forwarded to the department for consideration prior to any non-AMEA applicants.
If selected for hire, the applicant must be capable of bending, stooping, stretching, lifting boxes weighing up to 50 pounds, pushing fully loaded book trucks, and standing for up to 4 hours at a time.

All required certifications must remain current for the duration of employment.
If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon satisfactory completion of a national criminal background investigation (AS 12.62.160). Accordingly it will be necessary for the selected applicant to provide certain identification information and be fingerprinted. Fingerprint cards must be dated within 30 days from date requested. The processing fee of $48.25 plus the cost of being fingerprinted (variable) is the responsibility of the selected applicant and must be accomplished before beginning work.
If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted background check. A background check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.
Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the Military Service Interview Preference:
person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual's command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
