Job description

General Statement of Duties:
Reporting to the Access Services Manager, the Library Assistant III, Evening and Weekend Supervisor supervises the library facility, services, and student/contracted employees during evening and weekend hours. This person is the primary, regular staff member in charge during times when other staff or resources on campus are not available and enables the library to be open to students until 11pm and on weekends when school is in session. This role provides reference and technology help after 5 PM, performs library circulation/reference routines using the online computer systems, assesses emergency situations and confirms safety of students.

Hours:
2:30 - 11pm M-TH, 12:30 - 9pm SU; FR and SA off

Break:
5:30-6:30pm M-TH, 3:30-4:30 SU

Salary:
$48,739.43 annually/$937.61 weekly

Duties and Responsibilities:
E1. Ensure the routine operation of the library facility during evening and weekend hours, including regularly securing the building at closing, and opening the building as necessary.
E2. Maintain library security by making rounds to ensure proper study conditions and safety of students and others in the library.
E3. Respond appropriately and calmly to emergencies; independently manage emergency situations until appropriate authority is able to arrive.
E4. Provides basic reference assistance and instruction in library research to students and other users; assists and instructs users in the operation of computers, printers, microform reader-printers, and other library equipment.
E5. Provides basic Information Technology triage in the absence of IT Help Desk evening and weekend support.
E6. Assist in answering and assigning tickets from the Library Help Desk Jira system and responding to patron virtual chat messages.
E7. Determines the eligibility of borrowers and registers new patrons in online system.
E8. Charge, renew, and discharge library materials using the online library system to record the disposition of library materials.
E9. Assist in determining the shelving arrangements of library materials and may supervise the shelving and maintenance of shelf order to facilitate use and accountability of library materials.
E10. Assist the Interlibrary Loan department by pulling books, emptying delivery bins, and processing Commonwealth Catalog materials.
E11. Assist in verifying the proper location of books and other library materials by searching the library for misplaced items and by retrieving books as requested.
E12. Assist in determining the need for equipment, supplies and personnel and recommends the acquisition of such.
E13. Assist in providing on-the-job training to new evening staff, student workers and subordinates.
E14. Assist in the development of library policy by considering library goals and objectives, by utilizing statistical and other information and by conferring with professional staff.
E15. May attend professional meetings and training sessions as representative of the library to obtain information for the library’s use and to gain knowledge of library theory and current practices.
E16. Assist and instruct users in the operation of microform reader-printers and other library equipment.
E17. Collect materials from library book drops as needed.
E18. Other related duties as required.
Qualifications:

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time or equivalent part-time, paraprofessional experience (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitution below.

Substitutions:
An associate or higher degree may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.*

  • Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Evergreen or other library management software
  • Experience working in access services
  • Proficiency with Excel and/or Google Sheets and other Microsoft Office or Google Apps programs
  • Experience with preparing reports, statistics, and other documents
  • Ability to deal politely and tactfully with a diverse group of users

Working Conditions:
This is an on-site, in-person position in Salem, Massachusetts.

Incumbents of positions in this series work in a typical library setting; they may work in a confined area, stand for prolonged periods of time and work varied shifts, weekends or nights. Must be able to lift/move up to 35 pounds.
