About the National Academies Research Center:
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Research Center supports Academies’ program staff with the research process by providing internal research support. As we are a non-profit research library, our research services are available to internal staff only.
JOB SUMMARY:
The
Library Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the efficient functioning of the Research Center/Library and providing valuable assistance to National Academies staff. This position involves a range of administrative tasks and responsibilities, including scheduling staff trainings, organizing staff engagement events, and undertaking various duties as directed by their supervisor. They will also play an integral role in our report fact-checking service by fulfilling article requests and assisting with research workflows. Additionally, the
Library Assistant will facilitate access to information through our journal and database subscriptions. This position requires an individual who possesses strong organizational and administrative skills, with a keen attention to detail and a commitment to promoting effective library operations.
Job Description:
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
Administrative Support:
Assist with administrative tasks to ensure the smooth operation of the Research Center/Library.
Coordinate and schedule new hire orientations and staff trainings, ensuring that all staff members have access to necessary learning resources.
Coordinate and plan staff engagement events that support the strategic direction of the Research Center and collaborative with different groups across the Academies.
Monthly updates to Research Center/Library engagement space. (including staff book exchange, poster displays, book displays, game library and community puzzle)
Support Employee Resource Groups (ERG) to ensure access to relevant resources to support programming.
Information Access:
Assistance in person and virtual library users, with access to library resources.
Facilitate access to journal articles, databases, and other research materials to promote efficient research workflows.
Update and maintain the library’s intranet pages and A-Z Database List.
Assist with monthly newsletter.
Participate in Article Delivery Service platform and staff training.
Assist with subscription management, account set up, maintain statistics, and produce reports.
Research & Fact-Checking Assistance:
Respond to staff requests for contact information and quick searches for data.
Assist with fact-checking projects as assigned.
Promptly fill article requests for fact-checking projects.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Strong organizational and administrative skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities. Ability to ask questions when needed and follow through on assigned tasks. Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a dynamic team. Flexibility to adapt to a diverse and dynamic work environment. Demonstrated interest in research and a curiosity mindset to explore and learn about a wide range of topics in the sciences, engineering, public health, and behavioral sciences. Proficiency in using MS 365 and Teams, Zoom, SLACK, Adobe Pro, and other technologies.
Minimum Education/Training Requirements: High school diploma or GED, associate degree, or bachelor’s, in Library Science, Information Science, or a related field is preferred.
Minimum Experience: Two years of related experience.
Physical Capabilities: Ability to work at a computer for long periods of time. Frequently lift and shelve items weighing up to 10 lbs.
Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: None.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Reports to Research Center Director. Supervision is available to provide work direction and assist in problem resolution.
Work Environment: Hybrid work schedule, 40% onsite. Office environment, with occasional travel between National Academies’ facilities and to off-site meeting locations.
Compensation Range: The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine support equity, fairness, and transparency in our compensation programs. An estimated compensation range for this position is $22.15 - $30.46 per hour. Compensation offered to the selected candidate will be based on the candidate’s relevant knowledge, skills, and work experience, commensurate with compensation of current employees in comparable positions with similar knowledge, skills, and work experience, and subject to budget parameters. Note it is not typical for a candidate to be hired at the higher end of the range.
