LIBRARIAN III – CHILDREN’S(DISTRICT 1DISTRICT 6)

CHICAGO PUBLIC LIBRARY

Number of Positions: Multiple

Starting Salary: $ 76,956

This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City’s collective bargaining agreement with AMERICAN FEDERATION OF STATE, COUNTY, AND MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES (AFSCME) – BARGAINING UNIT 1, 3, 4 & 5. Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Under supervision perform daily responsibilities that include curating library collections for children ages 0-13, including books, toys, media, and technology. Conducting reference/ research assistance for children and their caregivers. Creating welcoming and educationally rich spaces for children and their caregivers. Developing education culturally relevant and community centered programming for children. Developing programming calendars and supervising the roll out of programming initiatives. Conducting outreach to schools, daycares, and community groups. Promoting and supporting library initiatives such as teacher in the library. Managing branch summer reading programs, library card campaigns, and other CPL initiatives. Assuming responsibility for branch operations, including conflict resolution and maintaining excellent customer service in the absence of the Branch Manager. Coaching and mentoring children services staff, as well as other ancillary staff at their location. Managing resource inventory and the associated budgets (collections, program materials, etc.)

LOCATION:Various District 1 through District 6
DAYS OFF: Two days per week
SHIFT: Will be required to work some evenings and weekends
HOURS: 37.5 hours per week to be scheduled during normal unit hours

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from an accredited American Library Association college or university with a master’s degree in library science or an approved foreign credential evaluation plus two years of professional library experience.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
This position requires applicants to complete an interview which will include a written exercise and/or a skills assessment test as part of the interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview will be selected.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

  • Previous Library Experience.
  • Previous experience working with children.
  • Customer Service Experience
  • World Language Proficiency
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Experience in early childhood or elementary education
  • Outreach and Community Engagement
