Position Title:
Lecturer and Executive Director, Graduate Program in Pastoral Ministries
Position Type:
Fixed Term (Fixed Term)
Salary Range:
Lecturer salary ranges from $72,748 to 80,817, based on the number of years of teaching experience, and benefits are competitive. The successful candidate will also receive a summer stipend of $9,400 for administrative duties.
Recognizing the high cost of housing in the local area, the University has established a rental assistance program for qualified faculty. For details, please refer to: https://www.scu.edu/provost/policies-and-procedures/support-for-faculty/housing-assistance/
Purpose:
The Graduate Program in Pastoral Ministries in the College of Arts and Sciences at Santa Clara University seeks candidates for the position of Executive Director of the Graduate Program in Pastoral Ministries (GPPM) to begin Fall 2024. Candidates with expertise in Pastoral ministry (any area) and/or practical theology (any area) are strongly preferred. The new Executive Director will be appointed to a Renewable Term Lecturer faculty position whose teaching, professional activity and service duties will be 100% covered by the Executive Director duties. The successful candidate will supervise two full-time staff (a department manager and the Director of the Markey Center for Leadership and Ministry), as well as student interns and student employees. The Director is responsible for developing and executing a strategy that ensures the GPPM's academic, budgetary, and programmatic goals are met and that all operations are conducted using best industry practices and in compliance with university policies and practices. The Executive Director reports to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and works closely with the Vice Provost for Graduate Programs. The Executive Director will also be supported by the GPPM Core Faculty.
Since 1983, the GPPM has prepared lay leaders to enter professional ministries in the Church and society, in furtherance of the University's vision to educate citizens and leaders of competence, conscience, and compassion and to cultivate knowledge and faith to build a more humane, just, and sustainable world. Rooted in the Jesuit tradition, the GPPM provides a strong theological foundation and pastoral formation for a variety of ministries. Using a variety of pedagogical approaches (in-person, hybrid, online and mixed-mode), the program offers a Master of Arts degree, graduate certificates, diaconal formation and pastoral enrichment workshops, all of which are characterized by an integration of theological reflection and ministerial proficiency. GPPM offers programs in nine West Coast dioceses, serving as a catalyst to develop home-grown lay leaders who will engage in their own communities of faith with the goal of sharing the Good News and building up God's kingdom. With its own Latino/a Ministry emphasis, as well its participation in the Lilly grant initiatives around Latinx theology and ministry, GPPM is uniquely situated to contribute to SCU's goal to become a Hispanic Serving University (HSI) in the coming years. As such, the successful candidate will maintain and build upon GPPM relationships with various diocesan offices, parishes, schools and outreach groups, will infuse a dedication to pastoral formation in all areas of responsibility, and will demonstrate expertise in practical and applied theology as it evolves in the local and global Church settings. The successful candidate must also have the ability to teach in the GPPM, or the department of Religious Studies, as needed. The ability to speak or understand Spanish is helpful.
Whereas the normal faculty renewable term lecturer position duties include teaching/advising (70% or 7 courses), service (15%), and professional activity (15%), the teaching, professional activity and service duties for this position will be reduced to zero to account for the Executive Director duties described below.
Renewable Term Lecturers are appointed for a term of three years. Reappointment to subsequent terms of three years and then six years are available depending upon the availability of funds, persistent programmatic need, and superior teaching, service, and professional activity. Promotion to Senior lecturer is possible after 9 years of experience. The appointment start date is September 1, 2024 and the appointment will be in the Graduate Program itself. The Executive Director will be evaluated by the dean and the GPPM core faculty annually.
Applicants are invited to visit the University's website (www.scu.edu) for background on Santa Clara's mission, scope of programs and degrees offered, demographic information on the diverse populations we serve, and the integrated strategic plan, which includes as a central priority the goal of advancing contemporary theological studies, education and ministry (www.scu.edu/santaclara2020).
Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. or D.Min. in theology, practical/pastoral theology, or related area required. A candidate with MA or M.Div, with extensive professional/pastoral experience will be considered.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years administrative experience in progressively responsible positions required. Higher education setting preferred.
  • A record of teaching excellence.
  • Evidence of dedication to the formation of lay or clerical ministers in a variety of settings.
  • Experience or familiarity with various teaching modalities: in-person, online, mixed mode and hybrid.
  • Ability to speak articulately for the program to a wide range of internal and external constituents including administrators, faculty, staff, students, diocesan personnel and church officials. Ability to handle difficult situations with a professional and pastoral demeanor.
  • Willing to travel to partner dioceses or conferences for recruitment and networking and be available for evening or weekend events.
  • Ability to develop reports, extract data, analyze output, and evaluate operations based on results.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain appropriate levels of confidentiality and to counsel applicants and students with discretion, creativity, and compassion.
  • Must be innovative and able to motivate faculty and staff by modeling emerging pastoral approaches.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically while balancing attention to detail, meeting deadlines, handling competing demands.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with computer platforms and software (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). Willingness to learn and use Workday and SLATE.
  • Commitment to the principles of a Jesuit education, the mission and tradition of the GPPM, and the university's commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging.
  • Ability to speak and/or understand Spanish preferred.
