Learning and Development Researcher
Location:

Remote, but preference for Dayton, OH; Norfolk, VA; or Orlando, FL

Position Description

Cognitive Performance Group (CPG) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Learning and Development Researcher. CPG’s mission is to contribute to each client’s success with a first rate, solution-centered team that applies research in the cognitive sciences to meet tomorrow’s decision needs, to improve performance, and to sharpen expertise at the individual and team level. We support a range of customer requirements as a talented, high performing, multi-disciplinary team of scientists, practitioners, and subject matter experts in the training and education domain. As a women-owned small business, CPG provides its customers within the Department of Defense (DoD) and other Government agencies cognition-oriented tools and methods to make sense of problems and find solutions in complex, time-pressured, high-risk operating environments under conditions of uncertainty.

The primary function of the Learning and Development Researcher is to design and develop innovative learning interventions to foster decision making, problem solving, and other higher-order cognitive skills. The secondary function is to conduct and support research in adult learning and instructional approaches for cognitive skill acquisition. The successful applicant will contribute to the design, development, and facilitation of innovative adult learning programs. This position requires experience in applying adult learning theory to design programs, courses, or workshops; developing instructional materials; facilitating interactive and experiential learning experiences; and applying technologies to enhance learning.

Specific duties include—

  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary staff of professionals to identify and develop tools and techniques to support adult learning and performance improvement.
  • Advise customers on best practices in adult learning strategies, processes, and methods, and support current and future initiatives with regard to learning.
  • Identify innovative program development strategies and processes to enhance instruction and curriculum development in military formal schools.
  • Identify training and educational strategies, processes, and technologies that could assist in the professional development of military instructors and curriculum developers.
  • Facilitate online and in-person workshops individually or as part of a team of facilitators.
  • Develop instructional materials.
  • Collect student reaction and performance data to assess the effectiveness of training interventions.
  • Conduct research in the area of adult learning and education.
  • Contribute to the development of new business in the research and development of tools and techniques to support adult learning.
  • Lead project tasks or teams based on level of experience.
  • Travel of up to 25% is required.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Education, Training & Development, Instructional Design, Psychology, Communication or related field
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience facilitating adult learning programs, workshops, or courses.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience designing and evaluating curriculum for adult learning programs, workshops, or courses.
  • Experience collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams made up of researchers, facilitators, technologists, and subject matter experts.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team or individually in a virtual environment.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team leader and a team member.
  • Comfortable working with ambiguity and new concepts in rapidly changing environments.
  • Exceptional organization skills and a keen attention to detail.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office products, especially Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Must be a United States Citizen.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in psychology especially in teaching cognitive skills.
  • Experience as an adult educator working with a military population.
  • Experience with teaching leadership development.
  • Experience designing and/or facilitating adult learning programs, workshops, or courses with military services.
  • Knowledge of the structure, processes, and practices associated with military training and education.
  • Ability to communicate research and product development in writing in the form of technical reports and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative data analysis.
  • Experience with knowledge elicitation methods such as structured and semi-structured interview methods.
  • Experience in applied research in two or more of the following areas: development of expertise; adult learning; military training systems; psychological research methods; and assessment of human cognitive performance.

Salary

  • Starting compensation dependent on qualifications and experience.
