This is a 3-year LEAD Teacher Assistant, Sub Bus Driver position
August 8, 2023 - August 8, 2026

Reports To
Classroom Teacher/Principal/Assistant Principal
Salary / FLSA / Non-exempt
Teacher Assistant / Grade 59 ($16.38 - $21.75 per hour); plus local supplement
Sub Bus Driver / Grade 51B ($15.00 - $17.00 per hour)
The salary for this position is based upon the successful applicant's years of service in the NC State Retirement System in the same or similar position. Experience outside of this system is not recognized for pay purposes. For current Lincoln County School employees, this position will be paid according to the current Lincoln County Schools' pay scale.
Nature of Work
Under general supervision, a Teacher Assistant will perform a variety of technical and clerical tasks in assisting a teacher. Employee may perform a wide range of tasks in order to support the efforts of the teacher, meet the needs of all students, and ensure the provision of quality instruction for all students. Employee provides one-on-one assistance with academics, behavioral problems, and personal and self-helps skills and may lead small group activities. Employee assists teacher with general housekeeping, clerical duties, and personal care needs of students.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Must meet Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requirements: A minimum of 48 semester hours of college coursework and/or a passing score of 263 (effective June 1, 2020) must be achieved on the Accuplacer placement test in Reading and Writing (Sentence Skills). The Accuplacer may be taken through Gaston College (704.922.2433). Study guides are available at www.gaston.edu
  • Valid driver's license and driving record that qualifies employee to obtain and maintain a valid NCCDL and drive a bus as directed by supervisor.
  • Must comply with all rules and regulations governing the safe operation of a school bus
  • Working knowledge of effective methods of working with students
  • Working knowledge of the core subjects at the grade level to which employment assignment is made
  • Some knowledge of the school organization and its community
  • Some knowledge of expected behavior of students and basic characteristics of ages and stages
  • Skill necessary to operate audiovisual and technological equipment and common office machines
  • Skill to make learning aids which will strengthen lesson plans
  • Ability to comprehend the purpose of teacher-designed strategies as a fulfillment of the instructional objective
  • Ability to discern significant student behavior and refer this to the supervisor
  • Ability to impart information to the student's level of comprehension
  • Ability to apply, impartially and consistently, proper methods of recognition, reward and punishment
  • Ability to solve independently most minor problems
  • Ability to follow minimally detailed written and oral instructions without constant supervision
  • Ability to record and store data accurately
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with parents, students, teachers, staff, and administrators
  • The employee provides support to the teacher in the instruction of students
  • Responsibilities: A wide variety of tasks are performed to support the teacher in the teaching-learning process for students
  • The work is directed by specific instructions, precedents and established policy
  • Problems are solved through the exercise of judgment in selecting the best course of action to be taken
  • The work is performed under the limited supervision of the teacher and/or principal
  • Gives group instruction as prescribed by teacher
  • Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift objects

Duties
  • Ability to guide TA planning sessions with a focus on small group instruction
  • Ability to lead TA colleagues in professional learning sessions round instruction best practices
  • Ability to model TA instructional routines and practices for Teacher Assistant colleagues
  • Have a solid knowledge of the different components of the present phonics program
  • Ability to follow minimally detailed written and oral instructions without constant supervision
  • Ability to solve independently most minor problems
  • Ability to record and store data accurately
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information

  • Checks and reports attendance
  • Enters data in health record
  • Records student behavior
  • Files data according to regulatory requirements
  • Monitors student behavior
  • Supervises students in the classroom and other locations
  • Creates and distributes awards for positive behavior
  • Promotes student self esteem
  • Teaches citizenship, social skills and respect for others
  • Reconciles minor student conflicts
  • Participates in development of discipline policy
  • Disciplines misbehavior through approved methods
  • Reports discipline problems to teacher or principal
  • Reports to supervisor significant change or lack of change in student behavior
  • Safely transport students to and from school as required
  • Other duties as assigned
