About the Role:
Job Summary
The Phlebotomy Lead is responsible for training and assisting in the supervision of phlebotomy staff. The Phlebotomy Lead must maintain sufficient clinical and managerial expertise to function as an assistant to the Phlebotomy Section Supervisor and perform those duties in the Section Supervisor's absence. Also, this individual is expected to display initiative, excellent verbal and written communication skills and be proactive in dealing with the day-to-day responsibilities and problem resolution in the department. The leadership role of the Phlebotomy Lead requires this self -motivated individual to work closely with the all laboratory Section Supervisors, Lab Administration, Pathologists and to be well respected by their peers and other co-workers. The Phlebotomy Lead will spend a large portion of time staffing the department as a working lead. This position will care for patients in the neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups. Employee performs clinical duties in accordance with population specific guidelines and adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as outlined in policy and procedures.
Minimum Job Qualifications
  • Licensure or other certifications: Successful completion of NPA (National Phlebotomy Association) or ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologist) certification in phlebotomy.
  • Educational Requirements: Bachelors Degree can substitute for lack of certification or three (3) years of experience required for position.
  • Minimum Experience: At least three (3) years of continuous employment as a Lab Assistant, and 1 (one) year of leadership experience. Bilingual skills are a plus.

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Responsible for training staff to competently perform duties according to Operational Procedures and assesses competency
  • Trains to controlled OP's and training materials utilizing adult learning methods and a variety of methods to increase retention
  • Assesses competency and ability to perform according to Operational Procedures and desired expectations.
  • Communicates progression of learning to the trainee and gives supportive, constructive feedback.
  • Updates management on trainee/s progress
  • Performs routine operations 20-60% of the time
  • Organizes and conducts monthly new hire training sessions for all NGHS Phlebotomists.
  • Creates and maintains new hire training schedules which is used as a communication tool for supervisors and outline for new staff.
  • Allocates resources appropriately within the department to ensure all new hire classes are appropriately staffed. Creates, maintains, and staffs training for new hire staff.
  • Works in collaboration with Manager to determine supply needs for the department for budget purposes.
  • Orders and maintains appropriate level of training supplies.
  • Collaborates with Training and Implementation to ensure "best practice" is captured in operating procedures and developed training material.
  • Advises and provides suggestions to improve system efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Participates in the departments Quality Assurance process as needed.
  • Audits operations to ensure adhered to departmental, quality and regulatory standards and procedures.
  • Coaches and mentors staff to adherence to procedures and practices.
  • Makes recommendations to improve efficiencies and effectiveness of systems related to procedures and work practices.

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities-Phlebotomy
  • Performs Phlebotomy Technique in a professional manner. Presents the Lab in a positive light to the public. Correctly performs routine venipuncture. Correctly performs micro-collection and other special collection techniques. Discerns Phlebotomy Techniques according to condition of the patient. Follows all safety guidelines to ensure the safety of the patient. Follows all safety guidelines to ensure own safety. Works well with other departments to coordinate special collections. Distributes clinical specimens efficiently and correctly.
  • Prepossesses clinical specimens for analytical testing. Determines the validity and integrity of clinical specimens to ensure quality test results. Operates a centrifuge properly. Understands and applies proper technique according to specimen requirements. Understands what tests are performed in the various Lab Departments. Is able to correctly route clinical specimens in a timely manner. Understands and correctly performs pre-processing procedures for all types of clinical specimens. Interacts with other departments in a positive manner to resolve identified problems with a clinical specimen. Is familiar with and correctly possesses the specialty tests that are sent to various laboratories. Is familiar with all laboratory reference accounts. Performs customer service functions for those accounts. (Provides information, insures correct billing, routes supplies, etc.)
  • Performs receptionist duties for departmental visitors and maintains communications in an appropriate manner. Answers telephone within three rings in a courteous manner, identifying self and department at all times. Assists callers, department visitors in any way possible, maintaining complete and accurate messages. Accessions outpatients in a timely manner and ensures they are drawn within 15 minutes.
  • Responsible for laboratory patient data and general clerical support. Accurately retrieves patient reports from computer files in a timely manner with no more than six errors per year. Accurately codes laboratory orders from the nursing unit into laboratory information system with no more than one error per month. Sorts and delivers all Inpatient, Outpatient, and reference report with less than six misrouting per year. Maintains a working knowledge of the clinical areas and assists as needed.
  • Maintains commitment to continued professional growth and development. Assists in training new employees through demonstrating proper techniques, and assisting with venipuncture when needed. Provides at least one documented suggestion for quality improvement in the Laboratory.
  • Quality, Productivity. Demonstrates autonomy and initiative in problem identification and resolution. Reports problems as opportunities for improvement to leadership. Identifies remedial actions that will minimize or correct the negative effect. Determines if problems are system failures, knowledge deficits, or behavior deficits. Prioritizes work to meet turnaround requirements that are set by Laboratory Administration. Functions effectively as a preceptor of students or new staff as assigned. Directs clinical training to enhance learning, achieve specific objectives, and promote skill mastery. Utilizes opportunities to maximize ability as a floater technologist as time allows. Functions effectively in the role of intermittent relief or routine technologist as needed. Has the ability to adapt to a changing workplace to meet the needs of patient care, and to prioritize work to meet the needs of our internal and external customers.
