Summary: The primary responsibility of the Lead Fiber Splicer is the preparation and splicing of fiber optic cables in both outdoor and indoor environments. The position requires a good working knowledge of telecommunication infrastructure, familiarity with fiber optic cable and splice enclosures, ability to use fusion splicing equipment and an OTDR. Ability to read, create and maintain splicing schematics and diagrams. Ability to identify and troubleshoot fiber issues. Must be able to maintain control of activities surrounding the assigned work site(s). Maintain accurate splicing and field notes. Support project timelines and provide accurate feedback. Other duties, responsibilities and qualifications may be required and/or assigned.
This position requires field work which may include overtime, weekends, holidays, and off hours. Travel will be required and may be up to 80%, depending on the business needs. Travel will be primarily within the state of Illinois. Unless dictated by a natural disaster or network outage travel will typically be Monday through Friday.
Essential Job Duties:

• Splice fiber optic cables including both loose tube and ribbon optic cables. Construct a proper splice case, including but not limited to grounding, bonding, isolation, slack storage, and sealing. Prepare and maintain splicing records, schematics, and diagrams
• Perform work in accordance with industry standards and adhere to safety procedures.
• Identify and Troubleshoot fiber issues.
• Maintain accurate splicing and field notes.
• Maintain control of activities surrounding the assigned work site(s).
• Other duties, responsibilities and qualifications may be required and/or assigned.
• Complete and pass OSHA 30hr training
• Maintain ETA Fiber Splicing certificate if available.
• Demonstrate proper setup of locate equipment.
• Regular and on-time attendance
• Work your shift as scheduled
• Must work well with others

Physical Requirements:

• Must be in good physical condition with the ability to stoop, crawl, bend at the knees and waist, squat and lift 50 lbs. includes body weight, equipment, tools and boxes.
• Must be able to stand for long periods of time on varied surfaces.
• May be required to work long and unpredictable hours.
• Position requires working outdoors in all types of weather.
• Ability to climb and work at elevations (e.g. from ladders, poles, lift trucks) exceeding 18 feet.
• Ability work in confined spaces (e.g. attics, crawl spaces, utility holes)
• Ability to pay close attention to detail and make good sound decisions based on information given.
• Ability to multitask and stay organized under pressure.
• High school, a combination of education and experience is acceptable.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Able to distinguish between colors sand read diagrams.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Ability to drive and back up a truck and trailer proficiently.
• Can respond to the needs of a 24/7/365 operation.
• Must be able to work after hours and weekends. Remain in service during outages until resolved.
• Must be able to work emergency schedules during natural disasters and network outages.
• Must be able to pass pre-employment screening that includes background and drug testing.
• Individuals must have a valid driver's license and driving record meeting the company policy conditions.
