We are hiring a Lead Electrical Systems Engineer - EMI/EMC, within the Electrical Systems and Components (ES&C) Network of Excellence in our global Corporate Advanced Technologies organization. Our organization's role is to identify, develop, deliver, and deploy leading-edge technologies to our businesses that enable product and service growth and enhancement. As the Lead Engineer, you will play an important role in shaping the technology roadmap and strategy in the domain area of Electrical Systems integration, and their applications to HVAC products and services. This role will involve leading and developing key technologies to enable further adaptation of electric systems in Trane Technologies' HVAC systems and accelerate electrification of the portfolio. This position will directly support key enterprise initiatives of electrification and decarbonization to meet sustainability goals of 1GT CO2e reductions by 2030. This role is expected to serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) within the area of electromagnetic interference/Compatibility (EMI/EMC) globally for the company.

This role will Influence technical direction through external partners, relationships, and by demonstrating applicability of new tech in the product portfolio. The role will also be to manage and contribute technically to key strategic projects. This position is eligible for a Hybrid work schedule (3 or more days onsite a week) and will be based out of our Davidson, NC or Bloomington, MN office location.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on early-phase prototyping for assessing technical viability of new electric system architectures, applied to HVAC equipment (Commercial, Residential and Transport)
  • Drive development of system requirements to enable creation of efficient electric system architectures. Support the analysis of proposed system architecture against the defined requirements, utilizing system modeling &simulation.
  • Evaluate the EMC/EMI performance of electrical and electronic sub-systems, and systems. Collaborate with other teams to develop and implement hardware design, improvements, and solutions to comply with the applicable EMC/EMI/requirements.
  • Acting as an SME in the domain, lead internal technology forums, participate in Design Reviews, test readiness reviews, and provide EMI/EMC design control advice for major projects within multiple SBUs.
  • Support EMI/EMC testing in a laboratory setting using the variety of EMI, RF, and electronics test equipment. Drive engagement with external 3rd party test laboratories, as needed.
  • Investigate EMC test discrepancies and anomalies and perform failure investigations using modeling or otherwise. Troubleshoot EMI issues from board to system level, providing practical, workable solutions for key projects. Support root cause analysis for field issues and perform data reduction of complex electromagnetic analyses and signal integrity assessments.
  • Lead advanced technology strategic projects, enabling Predictive Maintenance and health monitoring of Electrical Systems and components. Develop new and nurture existing external partnerships in the domain area of system integration, EMI/EMC, and reliability. 
  • Partner with Technology Strategy teams to actively scout for external funding opportunities in the domain area and provide inputs in development of project proposals. Network across the organization to identify and communicate opportunities to assess and apply next gen technology to product/services portfolio.
  • Travel~10%

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required in electrical, electronics engineering or related field. Master's degree and/or PhD is preferred.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or have the legal right to work in the U.S. without requiring sponsorship now or in the future.
  • 5+ years' experience in EMI/EMC requirements, analysis, design, and test experience, electromagnetic field theory, Maxwell's equations, radio frequency (RF) design, magnetics, and filters.
  • 3+ years' professional experience in Electrical Systems R&D, design, or applications and influencing, leading, and successfully developing technical strategies.
  • Expert understanding of EMC/EMI Systems, EMC Design and Electromagnetic Theory, and understanding of relevant worldwide electrical compliance standards and regulations. (e.g., CISPR 25, EN 55014, EN 55022, UNECE R10).
  • Excellent technical and product application knowledge of Electrical Systems and architecture, demonstrated knowledge of performing EMI/EMC tests such as conducted susceptibility (CS), conducted emissions (CE), radiated susceptibility (RS), and radiated emissions (RE).
  • Experience with EMC test software and equipment (e.g., power meter, spectrum analyzer, signal generator) along with evaluating customer and operational needs to define and coordinate cross-functional system performance requirements, ensuring compatibility of all physical and functional interfaces.
  • Experience with Electromagnetic Simulation software, i.e. CST Simulation and Ansys HFSS and an understanding of Electrical system reliability concerns, failure modes, and corresponding avoidance/detection strategies.
  • Deep intellectual curiosity and Industrial awareness and having the ability to define technology strategies aligned with enterprise goals, with input from multiple stakeholders and capability to lead technical projects as a technology expert in the specified area, also providing key technical inputs to other teams.

Preferred, but not Required:

  • Experience modeling Electrical Systems, and using those models to inform trade-offs against key architectural decisions (e.g. battery life, load profiles) and defining the system architecture to meet the overall goals of the product definition.
  • Experience in formal methods of Systems Engineering, including Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), understanding of AI/ML edge computing, and applying predictive maintenance, health monitoring concepts to Electrical Systems.
  • Knowledge of residential, commercial, and transport HVAC products, systems and processes and the potential/Interest in leading a team & people management.
  • Demonstrated thought leadership and innovation in Electrical Systems and components through research.

Base Pay Range: $117,150 - $155,350

Additional Compensation: Total compensation for this role also will include an incentive plan.
