Job Title: Lead Electrical Specialist

Hiring Range: $26.77 - $31.26
Compensation Grade: 2008
Compensation Pay Range: $26.77 - $37.48

This position will be filled on or after January 2, 2024.
Purpose of the position:
The primary purpose of this position is to perform skilled electrical design, installation, repairs, and maintenance of electrical systems for Buncombe County facilities and properties.
Minimum Education, Training and Experience: (Required at time of hire): High school graduate/GED required with minimum of six (6) years progressively increasing experience in electrical installation and maintenance work, including pneumatic and electrical control work, or equivalent of education and experience.
Additional Training and Experience: Continuous training and education on various equipment and controls within the HVAC industry. Completion of safety training.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation: Possession of an active N.C. electrical license; valid driver's license; must be 21 years or older.
Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Calculate, analyze, and review blueprints and obtain bids for all aspects of electrical installations on new and remodeled projects including lighting fixtures, control equipment, pipe, wire, devices, structured wiring, and camera wiring.
  • Provide upper management with bids from several providers; contact lowest bidder and reviews submittals; perform material "take offs" and order materials for completion of project.
  • Oversee all aspects of commercial electrical wiring, including but not limited to high and low voltage systems, structured wiring, cable TV wiring, and fire alarm wiring.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute complete electrical installations on commercial buildings.
  • Supervise the complete wiring of jobs.
  • Maintain electrical and fire alarm systems on all County properties, including implementing energy management projects, such as complete overhaul of lighting systems to new (LED) technology.
  • Oversee change-outs of essential electrical equipment on properties such as the County Detention Center, Courts building, and other essential buildings.
  • Assist other trades such as building, plumbing, and HVAC in completion of up-fits and new construction.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Knowledge of electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures to facilitate inspection, repair, maintenance, and replacement.
  • Knowledge of approved electrical methods, practices, code requirements, and safety standards, including those applicable to pipefitting and structural layout.
  • Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in the installation and repair of electrical systems, controls, machinery, and equipment in County buildings and facilities.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of electrical work.
  • Knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of necessary equipment.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment necessary to perform electrical installation and repair tasks.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematic drawings.
  • Ability to read and calculate poundage requirements in relation to voltage.
  • Ability to supervise, assist, and advise less-experienced technicians and semi-skilled to unskilled workers.
  • Ability to perform manual labor under arduous conditions for extended periods of time as required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments

All new employees are paid according to their years of relevant education and experience above minimum requirements for the position and employees have the opportunity to obtain pay increases via cost of living increases and promotions.
