Job Title: Law Clerk (Part-Time)
Office: General Counsel
General Summary
Under the direct supervision of the General Counsel, the Law Clerk provides technical assistance to attorneys and claims handlers through research and the writing of legal memoranda. The Law Clerk reviews pleadings, conducts contract and document reviews, and attends and participates in meetings as instructed.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs legal research and analysis for the preparation of briefs, pleadings, appeals and contracts.
- Writes legal memoranda in areas such as legislation, procurement, contracts, employment, construction, real property, vehicle liability, and Workers’ Compensation.
- Assists staff in contract and document review.
- Investigates factual matters through personal, phone and written contacts.
- Drafts for attorney review documents such as interrogatories, answers to complaints, answers to interrogatories, requests for admissions, witness lists and other pleadings.
- Reviews, organizes and summarizes relevant information contained in personnel files, Workers’ Compensation, medical and insurance records.
- Maintains and updates legal case files.
- As assigned, may represent the Office of the General Counsel in meetings with other departments, outside vendors, contractors etc.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Completion of first year law school at an accredited institution.
- Law school student in good standing.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.
- Proficient in the use of Windows-based MS Word and MS Excel applications; litigation tracking applications preferred.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
