Launch Driver Job Description

Mission Statement: The mission of the Larchmont Yacht Club is to instill and enhance an interest in yachting and the spirit of sportsmanship in members and their families. Encourage and provide programs for members and their families to promote and support yacht racing in the Corinthian spirit. Support a program of yacht racing events that meets the expectations of members and their families and enhances the reputation of the Club as a prestigious center of yachting and yacht racing. Encourage and provide compatible leisure and sporting activities, including intra and inter club competitions. Provide an active and enjoyable family oriented social environment which members and their families will support and in which they can participate with pride and enthusiasm.

The Launch Operator’s main function is to transport our members and guests to and from their boats. Operators may also be called upon to assist other club employees or club members during the course of one’s shift. As a launch operator at LYC you will be a representative of the club and directly interfacing with members and guests. Professionalism and a positive attitude are required. Operators are expected to deliver excellent customer service, but are first and foremost the captains of the vessels they are operating. Therefore, they are responsible for the safety of everyone aboard at any given time as prescribed under US Coast Guard Regulations. Launch Operators report directly to the Harbor Master.

Responsibilities

• Arrive on time, dressed appropriately (shirt tucked in, appropriate shoes). Colors (flagpole AM/PM) Fire Cannon (except Sundays)
• Launch Checklist (Harbor tour, mooring checks, waterline checks). Clean and care for the launches
• Fill out weather board: Tides, winds, weather, launch schedule, special notes. Complete all daily log entries and checklists
• Maintain cleanliness on the docks and gangways. Hose/ sweep off shells, debris from birds etc.
• Keep the launch shed clean (no food overnight, dishes etc.)
• Return dock carts to proper location if too many are on the dock
• Raise and lower club officer flags. Attentiveness to which officers are on the club grounds
• Carry and monitor handheld VHF radio when away from launch or shed.Respond to requests for launch service in a timely fashion
• Use proper radio etiquette when speaking on VHF
• Use appropriate speed when traveling through the mooring field
• Safe and professional operation of the launch at all times
• Exercise control of the launch when approaching docks or boats.
• Learn and understand emergency plans for medical, man overboard, weather.
• Give membership notice when launch is about to close for the evening. Properly close up and tie down launch for the evening

Requirements and Benefits

• USCG Limited Masters or higher
• Pre-employment drug testing as well as random drug testing as required by the USCG
• Nights, weekends and holidays required
• Typically, 810-hour shifts
• Overtime and holiday pay as per LYC Handbook
• Pay dependent on experience
• Seasonal Position from April to early November
