Under the supervision of the Dean of Career Pathways and Support Services, the Language Arts Instructor is responsible for teaching classes, implementing, and designing curriculum-based activities for the English language classes in the Carreras en Salud program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepare and present material for program classes according to curriculum guidelines.
- Maintain up-to-date hard and soft copies of lesson plans, syllabi, curricula, and handouts.
- Develop class materials for specific student learning outcomes based on assessed needs of individual students and the use of data and information to determine each student’s current knowledge and skill level.
- Identify, develop, and implement curriculum, assessment and instructional strategies designed to improve student learning in specific areas.
- Support student learning goals and assesses student progress.
- Provide an inviting, exciting, innovative, learning environment.
- Engage in effective and appropriate classroom management activities.
- Regularly evaluate student progress utilizing quizzes, exams, performance portfolios, or other type of qualitative or quantitative evaluation.
- Pre and post-test students using the TABE Test or other alternative assessment tools.
- Model the best practices of hospitality and positive culture.
- Design, write, administer, and grade exams, quizzes, and other forms of student evaluation.
- Is present for a minimum of 95% of scheduled classes.
- Motivate students to attend class, as measured by an acceptable rate of attendance and retention.
- Receive positive and acceptable student feedback in evaluations conducted two times per year.
- Manage and keep accurate daily attendance records through daily sign-in sheets for participants and submits attendance for each class.
- Demonstrate ability to work in a team with colleagues.
- Exhibit professional courtesy in dealing with program participants, colleagues, and team members, and the public.
- Show enthusiasm to teach, understands and applies current best-practices in classroom techniques and materials.
- Incorporate a variety of technologies into instruction including technologies used in work settings such as: photocopiers, scanners, and fax machines; and technologies used for personal settings such as: iPads, cell phone/telephone applications (ex. voicemail, texting, camera, and videos), and digital/video cameras.
- Maintain teaching skills updated by attending professional development on an ongoing basis.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree required; master's degree in education preferred.
- Minimum of one -year teaching experience with literacy-level adult English language learners preferred.
- Ability and interest in working with diverse populations.
- Has a strong commitment to diversity, with respect and sensitivity to culturally and educational differences.
- Understand cultural and linguistic barriers to education and has experience overcoming these for student success.
- Knowledge of principles and practices related to adult literacy, preparing lesson plans, syllabi and curricula, conducting and preparing assessment tools.
- Must be a self-starter, highly organized, patient and able to work well with others.
- Excellent communication skills in English required and Spanish preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Successful experience teaching in a cultural and diverse student environment.
- Ability to utilize technology to facilitate instruction, assessment and learning.
- Ability to maintain a high sense of confidentiality.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The nature of this work requires the ability to stand for long periods of time, speak during presentations in front of groups, and operate standard business office equipment. It requires the ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set-up and maintain work files.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The majority of the work performed is in a general classroom and office environment. This position requires the availability to work extended hours plus non-traditional hours required to perform job duties. It also requires participation and attendance at organization sponsored events and meetings.
