Purpose of the Position:As a Landscape Technician for the Grounds Department you will work independently and leading small groups to help implement and perform horticulture maintenance tasks. Perform applications related to fertilizers and pesticides to trees, shrubs, and ornamental beds throughout the university. Participate in and lead projects related to hardscaping, planting, pruning, and mulching landscape areas and work on special projects as directed to facilitate grounds department needs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Related to Position:- Extensive knowledge in grounds and landscape maintenance.
- Extensive knowledge of horticulture requirements related to insects, pruning, watering, fertilizing, and diseases.
- Extensive knowledge of grounds maintenance tools and equipment.
- Extensive knowledge of application of various environmentally safe herbicides and pesticides for controlling weeds, disease, and insects.
- Ability to read and understand pesticide and fertilizer labels.
- Experience with crew supervision.
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Possess and maintains a valid driver’s license.
- Must be a VDACS Registered Technician.
Experience:
- Experience in landscape maintenance services to include: plant identification, fertilizing, planting, mulching, pruning, trans-planting, and/or pest/disease control of horticulture plant material.
- Experience with safe use of herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides in landscape maintenance.
- Experience with the operation of all types of grounds maintenance equipment used in landscape maintenance.
Education:
- VDACS Certified 3A Pesticide Applicator.
- Certified Fertilizer Applicator.
- College degree in a related field.
Experience:
- Experience as a Senior or Lead Groundskeeper/ Foreman.
- Experience as a Technician at a university,resort, or high end landscape maintenance operation.
