POSITION SUMMARY:
This internship will offer public sector experiences related to Planning and Zoning and natural resource protection functions such as shoreline inventory, shoreline assessment, GIS mapping, data collection and data processing along with other miscellaneous functions. The intern must enjoy being outside, working as part of a team, have an interest in natural resources, and an aptitude for computers and computer programs. The intern will develop an overall understanding of county government and its operations. Internships assist students in reaching their educational goals by allowing them to augment classroom instruction with exposure to a real-world employment setting.
PRINCIPAL EXPERIENCES, DUTIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES:
The primary duties for this internship include:
- Shoreland Program:
- Assist with the shoreline inventory project
- Photograph shoreline from a boat at set locational intervals
- Ensure quality photo capture
- Analyze shoreline features
- Accurately catalog photographs in a GIS viewer
- Assist with the shoreline inventory project
- Planning & Zoning:
- Assist with permit intake
- Assist with customer service at the counter
- Assist with property site visits for permit issuance
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Frequent work outside on area lakes in a boat and on private property may cause physical discomfort due to sun, heat, cold, wind, and the like. Remainder is a typical office environment with no physical discomfort due to temperature, dust, noise and the like. May encounter hostile members of the public. The internship requires moderate lifting of up to 30 pounds, equipment, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Incumbent must be either a high school senior enrolled at a post-secondary institution for fall of 2024, or a high school graduate and student currently enrolled at a post-secondary institution and meet the enrollment criteria set by the Morrison County Intern Policy as well as all other criteria set in this policy. The maximum length of this internship is determined by the Land Services Director and may not extend past a total of 640 hours in a 20-week period.
