An Overview
A Laborer II performs general, unskilled, manual work of a routine nature. The duties require physical vigor. New Laborers are given specific work instructions. Constant supervision, however, is unnecessary for routine repetitive tasks. An incumbent may assist III’s and Equipment Operators I and II’s in their various tasks.
The Opportunity
- Picks up litter, empties litter cans;
- Operation of Small non-CDL sweepers;
- Works in the shop area making street brooms, or stocking materials and cleaning equipment;
- Power washes litter cans, oil spills, and graffiti on City right of ways;
- Operates industrial equipment such as forklifts, and pallet jacks in stocking materials in the warehouse;
- Operates small hand tools such as drills, saws, blowers, grinders, shop vacs, and weed eaters;
- Picks up large items such as white goods, tires, and debris dumped or abandoned on the street;
- Works cleaning before and after special events;
- Post no parking signs in areas needing to be cleaned. Assists in cleaning around vehicles with sweeper operator;
- Performs related work as required.

Minimum & Additional Requirements
To qualify for this position, all candidates must have completed High School or vocational school courses; ability to perform heavy manual labor in all types of weather; some knowledge of construction or maintenance activities and the equipment and tools of the trade; and one year experience in any trade; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
To be considered the ideal candidate, one should also have some knowledge of departmental operations and procedures related to maintenance activities;Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license may be required by some positions to operate some equipment in this class. Knowledge of equipment and tools and their safe use; the ability to follow written instructions; two years experience as a semi-skilled worker.
