Job description

This position is located in Yemassee, SC and cannot be performed remotely.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Laboratory Research Technician is involved in a variety of laboratory-based investigations and procedures involving biological, chemical, and physical domains. A primary component of the Laboratory Research Technician job is the sampling, testing, measuring, recording and analysis of results and data, all while adhering to correct procedures and established health and safety guidelines. In performing these tasks, the position provide necessary technical support to enable the laboratory to function effectively.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The following are tasks and responsibilities typically assumed by the laboratory assistant:
  • Performing basic lab tests, such as cytology, urinalysis, Immunoblotting, PCR, EIA, and bacteriology Inoculation.
  • Collecting, preparing, and analyzing specimens and samples, such as tissue samples, blood, serum, and bacterial cultures.
  • Operating, maintaining, and cleaning standard laboratory equipment such as microscopes, autoclaves, centrifuges, pipetting machines, and measuring devices.
  • Ensuring that the lab is well-stocked and resourced.
  • Using computers and performing mathematical calculations as needed; conducting searches on identified topics relevant to laboratory protocols.
  • Keeping up to date with technical developments, especially those which save time and improve reliability.
  • Adhering to the laboratory’s quality control policies; documenting all quality control activities; performing instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance.
  • Following and ensuring strict safety checks and protocols.
  • Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against, and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
  • Any other duties that may be assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Laboratory Research Technologist has no supervisory responsibilities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

To perform this job successfully, the Laboratory Research Technologist must:

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline.
  • Experience in animal research or veterinary medicine is preferred.
  • Experience with Non-Human Primates is preferred.
  • Requires knowledge of Microsoft Office.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline.
  • Requires knowledge of Microsoft Office.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

South Carolina Drivers’ License or equivalent.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents, including scientific literature, research reports and protocols, standard operation procedures (SOPs), and other instructions. Ability to communicate in writing to all levels of employees, including Directors and Managers.

REASONING ABILITIES:

Must be able to make decisions relative to research protocols and must know when to contact the Head of Research and Development and the Attending Veterinarian. Must have sufficient skills and abilities to know when there are problems within primate social groups and be able to work with appropriate staff to stabilize groups. The individual must be able to deal with diverse problems, to propose resolutions, and implement approved resolutions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job, with or without reasonable accommodations. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must be able to undergo fit testing for a N95 respirator mask. The employee may be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Additionally, the employee must be able to distinguish colors.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The AGI work environment characteristics described below are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job, with or without reasonable accommodations. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to inclement weather, including cold, heat with high humidity, and precipitation. The noise level is usually moderate. The job requires the ability to direct those catching animals in safe and proper procedures, and to catch small to medium-sized animals without supervision. Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds may be required. Work hours are 8 hours per day, five days per week. There may be overtime hours required as well as weekend and evening work based on animal health and Company needs.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $20.00 - $33.00 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 40 per week
