Job Description
The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system's 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Bureau of Water Supply seeks to hire a Laboratory Microbiologist II for a position in Microbiology section Watershed Water Quality Operations (WWQO) Laboratory located in Hawthorne, New York. Under supervision, of the Microbiology Supervisor, the Laboratory Microbiologist II will perform qualitative and quantitative analyses of drinking water and environmental water samples in accordance with regulatory requirements for drinking water and environmental water testing using methods approved by New York State. Specific duties include:
- Performing microbiological analyses of reservoir water, drinking water, stream water and storm water within WWQO.
- Performing phytoplankton enumeration, bacterial isolation and identification using a variety of automated and manual systems.
- Providing support functions to ensure efficient operations within the laboratory such as maintaining appropriate laboratory Quality Control (QC), media and solution preparation and Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) work.
- Serving as an analyst for several microbiological methods, including drafting and reviewing SOPs.
- Performing routine analytical testing using approved methods following written protocols.
- Ensuring that analyses are performed in accordance with regulatory requirements for water samples and conduct routine laboratory quality control procedures according to Environmental Laboratory Approval Program (ELAP)/ The National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference Institute (TNI) protocols and the WWQO Quality Manual. Methods include determinations of total and fecal coliform, microcystins and HPC. Performing sampling of wastewater, drinking water, and aqueduct keypoints.
- Reviewing data.
- Preparing standards and reagents.
- Obtaining satisfactory proficiency test results.
- Preparing method SOPs under direction of supervisor.
- Preparing and maintaining inventory of equipment and supplies.
- Ensuring compliance with all EH&S regulations.

Some of the environmental conditions experienced by Laboratory Microbiologists are exposure to hazardous chemicals, pathogens, and carcinogens. Laboratory Microbiologists will have protection during such exposure. Laboratory Microbiologists may be required to wear non-latex gloves, a face mask, or a respirator.
Special Working Conditions: Laboratory Microbiologists may be required to work shifts including nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

Preferred Skills:
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite software including Excel, Word and Power Point
- Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) is preferred
- Familiarity with data compilation protocols, including use of data reporting programs associated with laboratory information management systems i.e., STARLIMS

Residency Requirement:
New York City residency is not required for this position.
Hours/Shift:

Qualifications
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, accredited by regional, national, professional, or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) with a major in the biological, chemical, or physical sciences or medical technology, and one year of experience as a microbiologist performing at the technician or higher level in a clinical or environmental laboratory setting; or
2. An associate degree in medical technology, or sixty college credits from an accredited college or university, accredited by regional, national, professional, or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) including six credits in mathematics and six credits in either chemistry or biology
and three years of experience as described in "1" above; or
3. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization plus any combination of college education and experience described in "1" or "2" above to make up the equivalent of five years of education and experience. One year of experience credit will be given for each 30 semester credits of college education which includes at least 3 credits in mathematics and at least 3 credits in either chemistry or biology. However, all candidates must have at least one year of acceptable experience as described in "1" above.
