Requisition Number: 45542 Location: Boulder, Colorado City Boulder State Colorado Employment Type: Classified Staff Schedule: Full-Time Posting Close Date: 02-Feb-2023 Date Posted: 17-Jan-2023 Close All Job Summary The Department of Chemistry at the University of Colorado Boulder encourages applications for a Laboratory Coordinator II! This position supports the day-to-day operations of all organic chemistry laboratory courses (CHEM 3321, CHEM 3341, and CHEM 3381). This includes setup, shutdown, maintenance and ordering of lab equipment and supplies.

This position also serves as backup and supports the operations of the advanced chemistry lab courses (CHEM 4021, CHEM 4171, CHEM 4181, CHEM 4581 and CHEM 4591). This position works very closely with graduate teaching assistants and also supports and potentially leads the annual TA Training Program in August. This role will include training a lab coordinator from General Chemistry to serve as backup if both the organic lab director and lab coordinator are absent.

This will also include overseeing TAs while lab sections are running. This position is responsible for covering for the Organic Chemistry Lab Director and the Advanced Laboratory Lab Director in case they have to miss lab or work when something needs to be done that is time-critical. Who We Are The Department of Chemistry emphasizes knowledge of the basic principles of chemistry, including atomic and molecular theory, the states of matter and reactivities and properties of chemical substances. Students study the basic subfields of chemistry, such as organic, physical, analytical, and inorganic chemistry, all while developing the mathematical skills to understand fundamental chemical relationships and to manipulate experimental data.

Graduates also learn safe chemical practices, including handling waste, safety equipment, assembling chemical apparatus and designing experiments. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be Laboratory Preparation Prepares chemical reagents and solutions for large lab program; maintains and distributes chemicals, equipment, and instruments to lab rooms; chemical purchases; instrument maintenance; hazardous waste disposal in compliance with EH&S policies; collaborates with course instructors and lead TAs; maintains chemical inventory database; and leads innovations including activities to minimize chemical wastes and reduce energy and water consumption. Instructs TAs in proper laboratory methods and procedures.

Laboratory Support Troubleshooting of new experiments, especially research-based approaches, are required of this position. This also includes troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of lab equipment, as well as support for individual student projects in CHEM 4181. TA Management This position helps to oversee 20-30 undergraduate or graduate student TAs each semester.

This includes managing requests for lab supplies or equipment, enforcing safety rules, dealing with lab emergencies, answering TAs' questions, and distributing information to TAs as needed.Backup and Other This position needs to understand the work of the organic and advanced lab directors well enough to serve as a backup for a few days at a time, in case of illness or emergency. Four years of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position. Appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. What You Will Need Requires a knowledge of organic chemistry synthesis, organic molecule identification, instruments used for these tasks, chemical laboratory safety, and hazardous waste management.

Has experience working with a variety of instrumentation and instrumentation software. Safety training must be obtained shortly after hiring. What We Would Like You to Have An MS or PhD in Chemistry is preferred to utilize research experience and expertise in assisting with the development of experiments with a research focus, especially for chemistry & biochemistry majors.

Research experience in organic, inorganic, or physical chemistry is preferred. Experience with instrumentation including experience using, maintaining and/or repairing HPLCs, GCMSs, NMRs, UV/vis instruments, atomic absorption spectrometers, x-ray diffractometers and/or other analytical instrumentation. Safety training and hazardous waste management experiences.

Extensive experience with a variety of software and information technology skills.
