JOB TITLE: Laboratory Assistant
- 8 hour shift
- Monday to Friday
- 8:00am to 5:00pm
JOB STATUS: FULL-TIME
Job Summary: The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for a broad range of duties and responsibilities that are critical to the efficiency and accuracy of processing pathology cases.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Receives specimens from all sources and correlates test ordering information with Laboratory Interface System or requisitions
- Specimen receipt and processing:
- Receives pathology specimens from all sources
- Ascertains adequacy of specimens
- Accessions cases and confirms all client info, patient demographics/insurance, specimen document/container info, and the LIS correlate
- Ensures all case documents are uploaded into LIS
- Prepares and sends out ancillary tests
- Troubleshoots accessioning and processing issues; Assists with resolving suboptimal specimens
- Ensures proper and thorough documentation throughout entire specimen processing workflow
- Assists with unloading processors and preparing samples to be embedded.
- Assists with removing slides from stainers and prepares them for coverslippiing
- Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed
- Maintains working knowledge of operation and maintenance of equipment and completes equipment logs
- Assists in troubleshooting equipment issues; Documents equipment issues and steps taken during resolution process
- Cleans and stocks the laboratory workspace
- Receives, unloads and completes/retains required documentation of supply shipments
- Follows all biohazard/chemical hygiene/safety procedures as required
- Possible training in low complexity lab procedures to assist lab techs during high-volume workdays
- Other duties as required
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High School Degree/GED, or equivalent
- Familiarity with laboratory equipment and processes
- Must be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of
test results and communicate these to the Lab Manager
- Knowledge of medical terminology (preferred)
- One year of laboratory experience required
- Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills
- Ability to follow verbal and written directions
- Must possess excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Microsoft Office skills
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES
- Generally, not more than 50lbs. maximum with frequent lifting and /or carrying of objects
