Job Summary:
The Office of Administrative Hearings is located within the Law Department of Chicago Public Schools. The Law Department provides a full array of legal services to the Chicago Board of Education and the various departments and divisions of the Chicago Public Schools.
The Part-Time Labor Relations Specialist will ensure the effective administration of employee grievances, collective-bargaining provisions, Board policies and rules, and employee discipline to facilitate compliance with statutory and contractual requirements. The Labor Relations Specialist will assist in drafting, reviewing, advising, and editing various employee discipline and labor documents, including grievance responses and discipline recommendations and decisions, conducting research on labor and administrative law/employee discipline issues, providing advice to the Talent Office regarding employee discipline, and other matters as assigned. This position reports directly to the Executive Director.
In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the Labor Relations Specialist must possess the following qualifications:
Type of Education Required:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, required
  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school, preferred

Type of Experience Required:
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of related legal experience (as an attorney at a law firm, agency and/or as in-house counsel); administrative, labor, and employment law experience required
  • Experience in a Union environment required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Excellent communication and engagement skills (writing, editing, client communications, speaking, listening)
  • Ability to demonstrate integrity in a politically charged environment
  • Ability to quickly analyze a problem or question and decide the level of importance and necessary higher-level intervention
  • Ability to work independently without close supervision
  • Knowledge of best practices in administrative law, employee discipline, Labor Relations, federal and state labor and employment laws and related federal and state laws
  • Proficiency with Google Suite (docs, sheets, slides) and Microsoft Office
