Job Description
Main Purpose of the Role:
The Labor Relations Specialist will help develop, support, improve, and execute the company's Labor Relations strategy. The role will create and implement systems and processes designed to identify and resolve workforce issues early and proactively, working to avoid or mitigate harm to the company. The incumbent will also manage company responses to grievances and conduct any investigation or fact-gathering needed as a result, in addition to being the company’s primary representative on day-to-day matters involving unionized employees, union stewards, and other union contacts. Our LRS will also – in partnership with line and functional leadership – interpret policy and contract language, in addition to assisting the payroll function with employee questions regarding pay and hours worked.
The incumbent will attend HEA quarterly and ad hoc meetings as a primary representative of ZIM and provide details of meetings and potential needed actions to VP of HR and VP West Coast.
Additional responsibilities also include gathering and maintaining documents, records, and other information required for contract and policy development, negotiations, and investigations.
Main Tasks:
- Handles Labor Relations / human resource inquiries related to policies, procedures, and bargaining agreements; readily consults with internal parties on complex manners
- Serves as the initial contact and liaison for intake and assessment of employee questions or concerns
- Assists ZIM leadership with maximizing productivity of workforce; coaching, training, recommending options to increase labor efficiency
- Assist the payroll function by answering or clarifying questions about pay policy and/or hours worked
- Collects information and data to assess cost and policy implications of negotiations and disputes. This may include management and union proposals, pay and benefit considerations, working conditions, and other factors
- Prepare regular reports and scorecard data for senior management
- Prepare other employee / HR data for analysis as directed by line and function leadership
- Attend and provide HEA meeting details and potential consequences to VP of HR and VP West Coast
- Assists with preparation of documents and records required for contract negotiations, meetings, and negotiations with employee and labor organization
- Analyzes data for trends and insights; proactively proposes improvements based on data
- Continuously identify opportunities to improve, automate and streamline processes
- Partner with others in HR function on local, national, or global projects or initiatives
- Responsible for assisting with relevant annual budgets for leadership review

Requirements:
- 7+ years comprehensive Labor Relations experience with driving a variety of issues to conclusion, including investigations, grievances, arbitrations, etc.
- Strong subject matter expertise in the areas of US and California labor law
- Proven track record for developing, improving, executing, and scaling LR programs and solutions, in addition to managing and measuring program effectiveness and customer satisfaction
- Significant experience in managing, handling, and executing employee relations investigations and preparation of appropriate documentation.
- Experience with project management and change management.
- Experience collecting, synthesizing, and summarizing relevant sets of data.
- Experience preparing and presenting LR training & educational materials
- Experience in Container Shipping Industry preferred, but not required.
- Experience with the OCU preferred.
- Excellent communication skills and can organize and present data in an efficient and clear way.
