Lab Technician 2

1. Position Description

Work under the general supervision of the Plant Manager performing standard and complex laboratory procedures. Maintain accurate and timely records of test results; apply standard quality control procedures to assure accuracy of test results; operate, calibrate, and perform routine maintenance on specialized equipment; maintain supply inventory; collect data; organize and centralize files and records; and prepare solutions, reagents, media, or stains for prescribed tests. Exhibit individual intuition, work independently; be technically proficient and accurate; effectively communicate in both written reports and presentations; initiate and ensure compliance with applicable safety procedures; and possess attention to detail.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• This is an intermediate level position. The employee works in a developing capacity with increased responsibility for performing a range of laboratory technician assignments.

• Perform chemical analysis on a variety of environmental and production sample types through wet chemical techniques or by using lab instrumentation.
• Be familiar with operations, maintenance and troubleshooting of a variety of analytical instrumentation, including X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy, Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy, pH meter, Thermal analysis (Carbon analyzer), Inductively coupled plasma-Optical emission spectroscopy, etc.
• Maintain laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
• Prepare reagents and standards.
• Maintain organization and housekeeping with the laboratory.
• Perform data analysis and prepare reports for internal and external customers.
• Assist in developing and improving SOPs and SWIs for instrumentation, methods, and processes.
• Perform daily building checklists, maintenance, and housekeeping.
• Take overall responsibility for health and safety in your own areas of responsibility.
• Ensure that appropriate risk management processes are operational.
• Assist in problem-solving with company QC personnel and troubleshooting with plant personnel.
• Other duties as assigned.

1. Pre-Hire Requirements:

• Bachelors degree in the Physical Sciences (Chemistry, Physics, Biology) or Engineering or equivalent in education and experience.
• Three to five years of laboratory experience preferred.
• Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite and Windows operating systems.
• Must be able to type and communicate effectively with both managers, plant operators, and other laboratory personnel.

IV. Physical Requirements & Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
