Job description

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Candidate must be able to work independently to utilize to the maximum extent, every capability of each piece of equipment within the SKCC Flow Cytometry and Human Immune Monitoring Core facility to provide high-quality, state-of-the-art, training, education, flow cytometric, small particle and data analysis and cell sorting services to users .
CORE FUNCTIONS AND COMPETENCIES:
  • Provide high quality training and education for each piece of equipment housed in the facility to member users including, but not limited to, cytometers, sorters, and other cell/molecular analysis instrumentation in the core for competent and efficient routine analysis.
  • Assist with experimental design and analysis as needed.
  • Provide high quality and efficient services for analysis and cell sorting of all types of biological particles to core facility member users.
  • Responsible for utilizing to the maximum extent, each flow cytometer in the facility to its utmost capability with the aim of functioning as a state-of-the-art facility to offer flow cytometry services users.
  • Maintain proficiency in operation of all equipment in the facility.
  • Consultation with core facility member users to determine individual analytical cytometry needs, aid in development of appropriate protocols and techniques, advise standard and specialized services (including but not limited to reagents, panel design, implementation of new techniques), and help identify or provide reference materials including published literature in the area of flow cytometry/cell sorting that relates to users' particular area of research.
  • Provide advice and technical support to all users on equipment and analyses of flow cytometry/cell sorting data.
  • Responsible for orderly arrangement of instrumentation and maintaining a tidy facility.
  • Re-stock supplies, solutions, and reagents on a timely basis to avoid interruption of provided services.
  • Identify, schedule, and oversee completion of maintenance/repair of instruments on a timely basis to avoid interruption of provided services.
  • Courteous and professional interaction with facility users and administrators.
  • Develop, with the core co-directors, written and oral presentations of the capabilities and use of the facility.
  • Maintain an expert network of colleagues and peers within the cytometry field at various institutions, stay up to date on flow cytometry technical literature, and apply these experiences and knowledge to the core to maintain state-of-the-art facilities.
  • Develop BL3 flow cytometric analysis and sorting.
  • Update and maintain the SKCC Flow Cytometry Facility website with core co-directors and SKCC/TJU administrators as needed.
  • Demonstrate commitment to SKCC/TJU core values of excellence and innovation, integrity and respect, teamwork and communication.
  • Promote safety and the prevention of injury. Understand emergency procedures and demonstrate appropriate response. Compliance with all licensing/regulatory bodies, as applicable.
  • Involve core co-directors and users in the identification of system issues and development of corrective actions. Educate, involve and support users in error/event reporting. Problem identification and problem resolution.

Qualifications
EDUCATIONAL/TRAINING REQUIREMENTS: Bachelors
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS : Sound expertise and experience in flow cytometry methods. Knowledge of cell and molecular biology techniques is a plus. Ability to use all equipment as described. Minimum 2-3 years experience with flow cytometry.
TYPE OF EQUIPMENT USED: Network-connected computer station for off-line analysis, BD FACS ARIA II cell sorter, BD FACS Melody cell sorter, BD Symphony A5 SE, BD Fortessa, and BD Celesta flow analysers. FlowJo, FACS Diva and Chorus software.
WORKING CONDITIONS & ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS : This work is performed in a BL2 facility. Completion of biosafety training is required upon start. Most, but not all samples of human origin are routinely fixed, thus minimizing possible biological hazard. Good practices for safe work with possibly hazardous biological material are recommended in all cases. There is no expectation for heavy physical demands, but the possibility of higher than 'resting' physical demand cannot be excluded (e.g., moving pieces of equipment).
