Job Description: Laboratory Assistant
- Pay is $16-18, depending on experience
Job Summary
The Laboratory Assistant receives patient specimens and enters specimen details into laboratory software. Assistants may be required to support basic laboratory procedures including clerical tasks such as supporting client services staff and laboratory technologists, and maintaining records. Data entry accuracy and attention to detail are required for this position.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Follow patient identification and patient safety procedures.
- Processing laboratory specimens to prepare for analysis according to department procedures.
- Evaluate specimen integrity and initiate technical evaluation when integrity is in question (specimen labeling, specimen integrity, etc.)
- Perform specimen rejection follow up to initiate documentation and recollection.
- Complete and evaluate all quality documentation without omission and refer situations that fall out of acceptable range.
- Establish and maintain positive customer relations by being friendly, courteous, helpful, neat, and clean to present a professional image.
- Participate in the quality of the laboratory through evaluation of practices, reporting of quality events and suggesting areas for improvement.
- Maintain competency associated with laboratory specimen storage and transport.
- Effectively read and follow written instructions.
- Utilize a computer for laboratory support functions and know basic Microsoft Office.
- Work with a team to achieve department goals and objectives.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalency required.
- Previous experience in a laboratory or medical facility preferred.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and computer experience preferred.
Working Conditions
- It is reasonable to anticipate exposure to infectious disease/bloodborne pathogens and/or hazardous chemicals in this position.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to walk, bend down, and lift 20 lbs.
- Visual and auditory acuity.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
- Good eye/hand coordination and dexterity.
- Ability to appropriately dress to avoid exposure to bloodborne pathogens and bodily secretions.
