Tanner Clinic has an immediate opening for a Lab Assistant.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Answer the lab phone prior to the fourth ring, with the department and your first name.
- Stock all supplies for the front end to keep work flowing.
- Order tests in the EMR/LIS.
- Print patient information sheets to send out with bill patient insurance tests.
- Receive incoming laboratory test specimens from physician offices.
- Completes the entry of orders into the Laboratory Information Systems (Orchard).
- Perform inspection of the specimen to ensure that it is in the correct tube, is not damaged, and has not been transported to Specimen Processing appropriately.
- Prepare (centrifuge, divided into aliquots, etc…) and distribute to specific labs.
- Ship patient samples to outside reference laboratories if the procedure is not performed in one of our laboratories.
- Telephone reporting of laboratory results is provided on a limited basis and should be requested only when access to patient’s charts or to a computer terminal is no feasible.
- Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of the job
- Other duties as assigned.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: 1-2 years of lab experience preferred.

Knowledge:
- Knowledge of general lab terminology related to specimens and species processing.
- Knowledge of insurance company (including Medicare/Medicaid) details and exceptions for billing send out tests.
- Knowledge of specimens requirements for basic laboratory tests
- Knowledge of the process of sending out specimen test.
Skills:
- Skill in operating basic lab equipment.
- Skill in using computers.
Abilities:
- Ability to communicate appropriately, both orally and written.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with health care team.
- Ability to recognize and resolve hazardous conditions. Able to deal calmly with emergency situations.
Equipment Operated: Standard laboratory processing equipment including centrifuge and computers.
Work Environment: Laboratory environment. Exposure to communicable diseases, biohazards, and other conditions common in clinical laboratory environment.
Mental/Physical Requirements: Varied activities including sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting, and reaching. Frequent standing and working for extended periods of time. Periodic need to lift and carry items weighing up to 20 pounds. Some stress related to ensuring accuracy and safety of operation.
