Position Details
Classroom Assistant (CA) is a student employee hired by Disability Access Services (DAS) to assist students with disabilities to perform tasks that are a required component of their course. CAs do not do the work for the student, but they may manipulate materials, write, or complete other course-related tasks as directed by the student with a disability. All information about the actual course, lab processes and procedures are the student’s responsibility.
- The CA notifies and alerts the student around instructor/presenter displayed information (eg. Instructor went back three slides to answer questions).
- The CA will take a picture of any new drawings not in the handouts via their phone and will send the new image to DAS Alt Formats (Alt.formats@oregonstate.edu) to emboss the image as soon as possible. DAS Alt. Formats staff will then send the new image(s) to the student.
- If slides are out of order, the CA fixes before or during class.
- Embossed materials not matching images or missing information? The CA writes down exactly what is wrong with the embossed materials and why they don’t match the visual and then turns this information into DAS Alternative Formats to get the updated images redone.
- If the presenter made a mistake and alt text on their images didn’t save before submitting the slide show, the CA will make a note in the slides and send the new information and slides to alt. formats. Or, if possible, add the alt text to the images as the class continues following the presentation.
- CA translates instructor demonstrative pronouns into meaningful language.
