Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) CSS Lab Kit Assistant position for Crop and Soil Science at Oregon State University (OSU).
This position supports special projects in the department of Crop and Soil Science. The current project is building Lab Kits for the CSS 205 Ecampus course.

Position Duties
  • Consistently labeling and assembling small bags of soil and sand
  • Assembling, labeling, and sealing cardboard boxes
  • Consistently testing and calibrating instruments
  • Working safely with a team to collect soils from field locations
  • Consistently rolling, cutting, fastening, folding, stacking items in preparation for packing
  • Precisely follow inventory list to place the needed lab items into the kit box
  • General cleanup tasks: sweeping, vacuuming, breaking down cardboard

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*


  • International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Additional Required Qualifications
  • Ability to commit to a work schedule determined collaboratively with supervisor and team
  • Ability to follow written instructions and follow direction provided by supervisor
  • Attention to detail and organization skills
  • Ability to work safely and respectfully as a team member
  • Ability to work in a warehouse type environment (no A/C, some dust in air and on surfaces)
  • Ability to walk up to 1 mile
  • Ability to stand, twist, turn, bend, carry, and lift 10 lbs
  • Interest in agriculture, ecology, soil science, and/or natural science education

Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Crop and Soil Science major or minor
  • Current, valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record
