JOB TITLE: Teacher, Like Skills

TYPE OF POSITION: Certified

REPORTS TO: Building Principal

__________________________________________________________________________________________

POSITION PURPOSE: Teaches functional academic and daily living skills to moderately and severely disabled students in schools by performing the following duties:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.

1) Plans curriculum, lessons and other instructional activities according to the achievement level of students.

2) Confers with parents, administrators, social workers, testing specialist, and others to develop individual educational programs for students at different learning ability levels.

3) Instructs students in functional academic subjects and daily living skills utilizing various teaching techniques for students with moderate and severe disabilities.

4) Instructs students in daily living skills, such as independent economic self-efficiency, hygiene, safety and food preparation.

5) Observes, evaluates, prepares data and reports on progress of students.

6) Meets with parents to provide support and guidance in using community resources.

7) Administers and interprets results in ability and achievement tests when needed.

8) Carries out goals and activities set up by/with support staff such as occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech and language pathologist.

9) Instructs, trains and works with paraprofessionals; evaluates paraprofessionals annually in coordination with program coordinator.

10) Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1) Appropriate certifications by the Indiana Department of Education.

2) Ability to prepare written reports and correspondence.

3) Ability to communicate effectively with groups of students, parents, and school staff.

4) Skills in human relations.

5) Ability to plan and organize; good work habits.

6) Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations requiring decision making.

7) Other qualifications that the Governing Council may require.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms. Employee may also have to lift up to 60 pounds frequently.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.

The employee should be able to use the following machines, tools, equipment, and work aids which may be representative, but not all inclusive, of those commonly associated with this type of work: pen, pencil, pointer, stylus, projector, public address system, tape recorder, black or white board, chalk, charts, diagrams, examinations, manuals, maps, ipad, publications, reference books, textbooks, and computer adaptive equipment for individual children i.e. “G” feeding tube, oxygen, special chairs, hearing aids, check for blood sugar, braces, etc.
