The Arts Department in San Francisco Unified School District is seeking Art Teachers who are passionate about working with youth of all skill levels to teach Dance, Music (General and Instrumental), Theatre, Media Arts, and Visual Arts (Drawing, Animation, Photography, Painting, Ceramics, etc) for Pre-K/TK, elementary, middle, and high schools across the district.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
In the domain of access and equity, the Elementary Itinerant Music Teacher will be expected to:
  • Collaborate with school leadership to remove systemic barriers and design an equitable schedule for each and every students to access arts programming at each site, each year;
  • Review IEPs and available student data to plan and design curriculum that centers students' strengths, abilities, interests, and opportunities for individual growth, creativity, and empathy/community-building;

In the domain of curriculum, instruction, and assessment, the Elementary Itinerant Music Teacher will be expected to:
  • Design and deliver an inclusive and antiracist, standards-based, comprehensive and sequential music curriculum;
  • Provide differentiated instruction and accommodation for all students including ELD, Special Education, Foster and Homeless youth;
  • Demonstrate student-centered pedagogy such as discovery-based learning, limited teacher talk, open-ended questioning and facilitation of discussion and reflection to develop critical thinking and communication skills;

In the domain of professionalism, professional growth and development, the Elementary Itinerant Music Teacher will be an active member of school site collaborations as well as central office professional learning communities that support professional growth within a culture of humility, dignity, transparency, collaboration and support. The specific responsibilities in this domain are:
  • Collaborate with colleagues/other itinerant teachers/TSAs/community partners to plan and align curriculum to the newest 2019 CA state standards and antiracist teaching practices;
  • Practice effective, positive, respectful and proactive communication with classroom teachers, support staff, students' parents/guardians, and administrators which includes phone calls, emails, Google Classroom/Synergy chat/messaging, and meetings;

This position requires travel to various locations throughout the District. This position may require sitting, standing, squatting, kneeling, twisting, lifting and pulling/pushing a cart of instruments/materials. In accordance with the California Standards of the Teaching Profession, itinerant teachers work under the supervision of central office administrators and in collaboration with school site administration, families and community and are responsible for the fulfillment of the essential duties set forth.

  • Able to scaffold instructional activities that facilitate engaging and appropriate learning opportunities.
