Back to all Jobs IT Systems Technician Closes On: December 4, 2023 at 04:00 PM CST Location: Police Department, Northport , AL 35476 Job Status: Full-Time Rate of Pay: $49,670.68 - $74,467.93 Position Type: Full-Time Status: Accepting Applications Apply Now Job Summary Under general direction and within guidelines set by policies, rules, and regulations, the purpose of this position is to provide technical support for the City's computer hardware and software. This individual is responsible for all support phases of the City's users, computers, software packages, printers, and other related systems. The position reports to the IT Manager.

Essential Job Functions User Support and General Responsibilities Responds to support requests and problems related to software or computer systems on a 24-hour basis and is responsible for: Initiating appropriate action to correct errors and get equipment back online. Communicating with service representatives to provide information and additional troubleshooting as needed. Updating the Help Desk ticketing system with resolutions and relevant notes.

Reporting problems and resolutions to the Assistant Director of Information Technology for issues requiring extra investigation or guidance. Provides technical support, information, training, and assistance to system users for hardware and software operation and related issues. Maintains appropriate documentation of support and system activities, as directed by the IT Help Desk Administrator.

Responsible for installation and maintenance of network and computer systems in Public Safety vehicles for both the Police and Fire Departments. Set up, install, and repair computer hardware and peripheral equipment. Tests and evaluates new hardware.

Installs new software as well as perform upgrades and troubleshooting on existing software. Receives incoming shipments/packages of computer-related materials. Maintains knowledge of current operating systems and software programs used by the City of Northport.

Incorporates continuous quality improvement principles in day-to-day activities. System and Network Support Activities Serves as backup administrator to the Assistant Director of IT for server and network systems. Administers/operates computer equipment, resolves hardware problems, and assists in the analysis of system errors and performance.

Assists in identifying and resolving network problems. Configures user accounts, including additions, changes, or removals. Qualifications Education and Experience: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a minimum of one year of IT Support experience, have graduated from an accredited two-year college with a minimum of two years of IT Support experience, or have four years of IT Support experience.

Special Qualifications: Obtain a certified Spillman Administrator certificate within 12 months of employment. Possession of valid IT certifications (MCSA/MCSE, MTA, or CompTIA) preferred. Possession of a valid, State of Alabama driver's license to operate a motor vehicle.The requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Knowledge of the functions, procedures and workflow of city departments as they relate to computer operations/support; provides computer support to departments. Knowledge of City ordinances, policies, and procedures. Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs). Skill in planning and organizing work. Skill in utilizing such office equipment as a calculator, typewriter, facsimile machine, and copier.

Skill in interpersonal relations; establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public. Skill in verbal and written communication. Skill in the use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.

Skill in using computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes. Ability to prioritize workload. Ability to draft correspondence, official replies, gather and maintain technical and statistical data, and publication and reference materials.

Ability to maintain and retrieve files, records, reports, plats, site plans, applications and other official documentation. Ability to manage multiple projects in an ever-changing environment. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruction both written and verbal form.

Ability to maintain regular attendance on the job. Ability to schedule flexible work periods outside the normal workday and be on 24-hour call. Ability to organize and communicate effectively.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to maintain effective working relationship with other employees and the public. Physical Requirements and Work Environment PHYSICAL DEMANDS The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: Sitting: Particularly for sustained periods of time. Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet. Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.

Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm. Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand. Must have the ability to place records, files, and boxes weighing no more than 25 pounds on shelves about head level.

Hearing 2: Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound. Must have the ability to hear well enough to carry on a normal conversation with clients both in person and on the telephone. Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.

Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles. Manual Dexterity: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.

Must have the ability to efficiently operate a computer, calculator, fax, copy machine and other related office machines. Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes. Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time. Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.

Visual Acuity 1: Have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading. Must have the ability to see well enough to interpret data on a computer monitor. Visual Acuity 2: Including color, depth perception, and field vision.

Visual Acuity 3: Visual Acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures. Visual Acuity 5: Have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, operation of machines; using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes. Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
