Job description

Job Summary
The Data Engineer is an IT professional with the primary focus being on all things data. The ideal candidate enjoys working in a dynamic team environment to design and develop data solutions including batch/streaming data ingest, data integration/transformation, and operationalizing data science projects. This role will work closely with Continental Data Scientists, business SMEs, and IT professionals to architect, model, expose, optimize, and expand data consumption across Continental's big data infrastructure. As a Data Engineer, you will be expected to help recommend and implement ways to improve data reliability, efficiency, and data quality. This will be done by utilizing a variety of languages and tools to merge systems together or try to hunt down opportunities to acquire new data from other systems to populate the big data platform used for reporting, analysis, and data science projects.
Performs a range of straightforward assignments. Acts as a resource for team members with less experience. Established knowledge of fundamental theories, principles and practices in the area of specialization. Exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to solve problems of moderate complexity; seeks assistance in resolving more complex issues. Works under a moderate level of supervision.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Collaborate across business and IT teams to create data solutions including data ingest and machine learning models.
  • Coordinate closely with other IT professionals to manage architecture, platforms, and data solutions.
  • Work with management to prioritize and communicate development needs and status.
  • Create, maintain, and optimize data pipelines utilizing leading big data methodologies, such as Spark, Python. Scala, Java, SQL, Databricks and Amazon Web Services
  • Identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns in complex data sets.
  • Operationalize machine learning models as they are deployed into production.
  • Rapid, hands-on development of new data and analytics prototypes using Python.
  • Root-cause and resolve data issues within the data pipeline and enterprise data warehouse.

  • Technical understanding of data models, database design development, data mining and segmentation techniques
  • Knowledge of statistics and experience using statistical packages for analyzing datasets (Excel, SPSS, SAS, R Scripting, Python, etc.)
  • Adept at database queries (SQL), mining, research, and presenting findings.
  • Foundational understanding of classical Data Warehouse paradigms (i.e., Change Data Capture, Star-Schema, OLAP) as well as "next generation" capabilities centering around "big data" (i.e., file-based, data streaming, queueing, data tagging, etc.)
  • Ability to work efficiently under Unix/Linux environment, with experience with source code management systems like Azure DevOps
  • Understanding of Amazon Web Services native tools like S3, Kinesis, Redshift, EMR, Athena, Lambda, Quick sight, and others
  • Understanding of cloud and distributed systems principles, including load balancing, networks, scaling, in-memory vs. disk, etc.; and experience with large-scale, big data methods, such as MapReduce, Hadoop, Spark, Hive and SAAS model platforms like Databricks, Cloudera, etc.
  • Working understanding of big data systems (preferably Databricks) and the associated concepts: Delta, Parquet, Spark (PySpark), DB SQL, Notebooks, Cluster/Design Management

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Experience with large, complex initiatives, working with an in-house development team or commercial off the shelf application implementations and software vendors.
  • Fluency in several programming languages (e.g., C/C++, Python, Scala, Java, Unix/Linux Shell Scripting, SQL) with the ability to pick up new languages and technologies quickly.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Mathematics, or a related field from an accredited College or University
  • Experience working as a developer/architect and/or administrator.
  • Oil & Gas industry experience including common applications (Procount / event / Carte, Peloton Wellview, Aries, OFM, SAP ECC, PRA, Allegro) is considered a plus.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Requires prolonged sitting, some bending and stooping.
  • Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer keyboard and calculator.
