US Citizenship Required: Yes
In order to be considered for an internship opportunity, your current grade point average (GPA), expected graduation date, and major must be listed on your resume.
2024 Summer Intern Opportunities for Information Technology and Computer Science Students
This opportunity is being offered by National Aerospace Solutions, LLC at the Hypervelocity Wind Tunnel No. 9 (Tunnel 9) located at the Silver Spring, MD site of AEDC. National Aerospace Solutions (NAS) is the team selected by the U.S. Air Force to conduct Test and Operations Sustainment at the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC). AEDC operates more than 55 aerodynamic and propulsion wind tunnels, rocket and turbine engine test cells, space environmental chambers, arc heaters, ballistic ranges and other specialized units located in six states. Many of the complex's test units have capabilities unmatched elsewhere in the United States; some are unique in the world. AEDC is one of three installations which are part of the Air Force Test Center (AFTC), one of six subordinate commands of the Air Force Materiel Command organization and an important national resource.
An exciting career opportunity exists for IT and Computer Science Students to join a small team of engineers and technicians who operate and maintain the Air Force’s and Department of Defense’s primary high Mach number and high Reynolds number facility for hypersonic ground testing and the validation of computational simulations.
Tunnel 9 is a Geographically Separated Unit (GSU) of a larger organization and as a result many discrete functions are small in scale and accomplished with a smaller, more agile workforce than that of a large organization. Tunnel 9 provides aerodynamic simulation critical to hypersonic system development and hypersonic vehicle technologies at speeds from Mach 7 to Mach 18. Tunnel 9 is the highest Reynolds number, largest scale ground test facility in the world capable of simultaneously collecting continuous pitch polar static force and moment, pressure and heat transfer data during each run.
The NAS Internship Program offers10-12 week full time summer internship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in engineering and Computer Science. As part of the internship, you are paired with experienced engineers and scientists who serve as your mentor(s) in completing assigned projects gaining valuable experience in your field of study while contributing to Air Force and NAS missions. You will be required to present a briefing to senior management on work accomplished, lessons learned, and further recommended actions.
Our internship is structured such that you are assigned multiple tasks to complete throughout the summer to provide exposure to the variety of types of work conducted at AEDC Tunnel 9. These are real engineering assignments that need to be completed, not busy work to keep you occupied.
Examples of types of tasks interns have worked include: (these are examples, not an exhaustive list):
Minimum requirements for consideration:
Preferred qualifications
Due to Air Force Security requirements, U.S. Citizenship is required for employment at AEDC.
NAS is an Equal Opportunity Employer of Minority/Women/Veterans/Disabled (AA/EOE). All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, pregnancy, physical or mental disability, genetic information, protected veteran status or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local law.
Applicants with a physical or mental disability, who require a reasonable accommodation for any part of the application or hiring process, may e-mail their request to careers@nas-llc.us. PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT RESUMES to this address as they will not be considered for employment opportunities.
