Your Opportunity

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Perform civil engineering design which may include engineering drawings, hydraulic system calculations, pipe design calculations, engineering reports, design criteria, and prepare applications for regulatory agencies.
  • Assist in the preparation of engineering project documents, client presentations, client contact and communication pertaining to specific project deliverables.
  • Attend and assists in client, contractor, stakeholder, and regulatory agency meetings to gain a better understanding of client's goals, project requirements, site assessments, key challenges, coordination.
  • Assist in the development of design through sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats.
  • Recognize when technical problems are developing and initiates appropriate corrective actions.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines to ensure compatibility with the design intent.
  • Assist with the development of job specific discipline specifications.
  • Support alternative analyses (route/alignment, pipe size and material, pump sizing, etc.) for use in business case evaluations and decision making.
  • Serve as civil designer on large to mega transportation projects.
  • Coordinate and provide technical guidance to Utility Design teams for transit & rail, highways, streets, and roadway projects to meet local, state and federal requirements.
  • Conducts and/or coordinates quality assurance and quality control on assigned projects and facilitates independent technical review projects by others.
  • Assist in the review of shop drawings and submittals, responds to request for information, prepares site observation reports, and performs other contract administration tasks.
  • Assist in the evaluation and selection of civil systems and materials.
  • Participate in value engineering and basic cost estimating.
  • Serve as civil designer on large to mega transportation projects.
  • Participant on multidisciplinary teams in an office environment as well as in virtual team environment.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and also as part of a team. 
  • Willingness to learn new skills and interface with multiple project managers and clients.
  • Involved in the permitting process of projects, which may require meeting with clients, contractors, interested stakeholder parties, reviewing agency personnel.
  • Coordinates with the regulatory and third parties to seek final approval.

Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Experience with Central California public agencies and municipalities desired.
  • Sound knowledge of utility industry practice and demonstrated commitment to excellence in customer service
  • General understanding of concepts of relevant areas of civil engineering design, including gravity and pressure systems, geotechnical, survey, storm water/drainage design, road design, erosion and sediment control, and grading.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with utility companies
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing design of complex utilities for transportation projects in California
  • Accountable for making decisions on large projects
  • Demonstrated knowledge working with irrigation districts in California
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Understanding of Caltrans utility relocation procedures
  • Understanding of utility right of way deliverables
  • Direct experience in client management and business development is an asset
  • Can work well in a team environment without direct supervision
  • Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, along with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks
  • Possess a hard-working and positive attitude
  • Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
  • Ability to effectively discuss project issues with clients, contractors, funding agencies and reviewing agencies; to deliver technical presentations in public forums
  • Possesses excellent time-management skills, thorough understanding of task assignment and schedule, budgeting and efficient use of time and available resources.
  • Understanding of local and regional jurisdictional codes, legal and design requirements in relevant jurisdictions.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in any Engineering field, Civil Engineering preferred
  • Minimum 5 years related experience preferably for utility and transportation projects
  • Experience in leadership, including defining and setting the direction for a team, project, or office; strategy development a plus.
  • Travel to other projects sites and other offices may be required.
  • Engineer In Training (EIT) required 
  • Registered Professional Engineer in California, preferred, or ability to obtain within one year

Typical office environment includes working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

  • Location Description: Min/Max Pay Range for postings located in CO and HI
  • Min Pay Range: $79,400
  • Max Pay Range: $115,200
  • Location Description: Min/Max Pay Range for postings located in CA
  • Min Pay Range: $38.17 Per Hour
  • Max Pay Range: $55.38 Per Hour
  • Note: The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.
