Inventory Specialist

Job Description
Purpose of Job
Performs technical and clerical work in the coordination of the inventory system for the water and wastewater utilities.
Essential Job Duties
- Handles requisitions and receives, examines, cleans, stores, records, and issues supplies for use in utility construction, maintenance and repair operations.
- Maintains inventory control system by keeping shelves and bins stocked and organized.
- Works in conjunction with water/wastewater superintendents, crew leaders, water and wastewater operations, and maintenance personnel.
- Maintains information and pricing on all inventory or parts that could be used in the daily operations of the department.
- Maintains accurate records of items and their disposition.
- Performs annual department inventory counts on all stock and consumable assets.
- Maintains maintenance schedule on vehicles, equipment, and radio systems.
- Maintains records on all electronic equipment, automobiles, heavy equipment, and properties for insurance purposes.
- Prepares supply orders and pricing, bids, quotes, and specifications for all vehicles, supplies, and equipment.
- Oversees all emergency equipment and issuance of necessary apparel for the water and wastewater department personnel.
Other Job Duties
- Operates equipment to assist crews with loading rock, moving materials, etc.
- Reviews all water and wastewater work orders for correctness on inventory items.
- Visits job sites when an issue occurs to determine a need for parts and delivers those parts.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Primary Job Challenges
- Maintaining a working knowledge of all facets of water and wastewater utility operations.
- Adjusting to a diversity of various connections and the types of piping used in a water system and the items needed to repair each type of material.
- Becoming proficient with the daily operations and procedures for the department.
Equipment Operated
- Personal computer and/or tablet with applicable software; other standard office equipment including copier, printer, calculator, etc.
- Automobile and/or truck with a two-way radio.
- Light equipment such as a dump truck, truck and trailer, or tow motor (forklift) for inventory management.
Key Competencies Required
- Thorough knowledge of the operation of computers, equipment, and software.
- Thorough knowledge of all city policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of the construction practices for both water and wastewater to include service taps, main repairs, and new main installations.
- Knowledge of the methods, practices, equipment, and tools for all construction means and methods.
- Knowledge of all safety hazards and safety precautions that may become necessary.
- Knowledge of the care required for use and maintaining related equipment.
- Ability to recognize the names of parts, materials, and supplies and understands their usage in the everyday operations in the department.
- Ability to recognize potential problems with equipment, water, and wastewater lines and structures.
- Ability to adequately organize and maintain accurate records.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees and the general public.
- Ability to work independently and solve problems.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Employee will work primarily indoors, but will occasionally work outdoors with the possibility of being exposed to adverse weather conditions, biohazard waste, environmental hazards, intense noise, machinery and its moving parts, noxious odor, and hazardous situations.
- Employee may be required to sit, stand, stoop, walk, lift, and carry light and heavy objects (more than 25 pounds).
Qualifications
Education and Experience: A high school diploma or GED with 5 years of experience in a construction, utility, or material management position or a bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related experience; or a combination of experience and education equivalent to the required knowledge and abilities.
Required Certifications/Licenses: Must possess a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Tennessee. Must obtain Class A CDL license within one (1) year of position. Must pass a drug screen and physical examination based on the essential functions of the job given by the city’s designated physician.
