DePaul College Prep Intervention Specialist Position Description


Reports To:
Director of Student Services


The Intervention Specialist is a data-driven and student-centered leader interested in developing and maintaining systems that promote student success across all content areas. Based on student data and demonstrated need, the Intervention Specialist role is designed to coordinate the implementation of Tier 2 interventions in collaboration with faculty colleagues. These interventions occur throughout the day, including before and after school. In this role, communication with students, parents, teachers and counselors is paramount so that trusting relationships form the foundation of this work, ensuring student academic success.


Areas of Responsibility


Data Analysis:

  • Monitor and analyze weekly eligibility data & documentation
  • Generate spreadsheets using metrics and formulae to identify students needing Tier 2 Academic Interventions
  • By grade level, analyze student performance data over time (quarters, semesters, years) to find patterns of achievement and lack of achievement across our student population
  • Identify groups of students who are underperforming based on data collected
  • Lead data analysis conversations during Student Success Team (MTSS) and the Instructional Leadership Team
  • Identify patterns of student challenges and successes in subsections of DePaul College Prep course offerings
  • Lead teams through collaborative protocols to identify root causes of student struggles/failing grades
    • analysis of student performance data to align type, duration and intensity of Tier 2 interventions necessary to promote academic improvements
    • collect data from student observations in academic learning spaces to inform coaching conversations with school-based staff and students about type, duration, and intensity of Tier 2 interventions necessary to promote academic improvements
    • Facilitate conversations about Tier 2 intervention plans and results with all stakeholders, including but not limited to: students, families, and school-based staff


Student Support

  • Based on student achievement data, identify students who will benefit from targeted Tier 2 interventions
  • Create and implement plans of support for individual students that include interventions specific to a student, working in collaboration with with each Dean of Students, the Counseling and Academic Support teams to coordinate services and communication with students, teachers and parents
  • Co-Lead the Student Problem Solving Team with the Head of Academic Support Team and the MTSS process with Head of Counseling and provide oversight of interventions implemented and resulting effectiveness, based on student achievement data
  • Manage Resource Hub as a resource staffed by teachers for students to utilize during the school day to receive content area support. Responsibilities include:
    • Identifying students in need of support and communicating with them and their parents about this resource
    • Liaison to content area teachers, counselor & family
    • Schedule teachers into periods with support School Data Manager
  • Design and manage the student support sessions before final exams (teacher and counselor participation, marketing, communication with students and families, etc.)
  • Coordinate and facilitate “Academic Warning” meetings with students, families, counselors, as needed


Teacher Support

  • Facilitate collaborative conversations with teachers of students who demonstrate patterns of academic challenges in specific content areas and courses
  • Collaborate to analyze instructional practices and student performance data to pinpoint areas for improvement
  • Observe in classrooms with a focus on struggling students; engage in reflection feedback conversations with teacher about their student’s performance
  • Assist teachers with implementation of student-centered instructional practices through lesson design that engage students in authentic ways allowing for student choice and voice in their learning
  • Analyze and celebrate student assessment data as students make strides in achievement; address instances where students continually fail assessments but complete all required assignments proficiently; Assist teachers in pacing of instruction based on their curriculum map unit
  • Facilitate bi-weekly meeting with EDGE teachers to discuss current interventions & students beginning Academic Intervention Plans. EDGE is our Title 1 Academic Support program.


Collaboration and Communication with:

  • Academic Support team to use shared strategies and tools for student and teacher support; establish regular schedule of meetings with team, including EDGE teachers
  • Counseling team and Deans of Students to coordinate student support services related to social-emotional and behavioral aspects of a student’s profile
  • Parents of students to develop solid partnerships that lead to improved communication and at home support for students
  • Faculty to facilitate peer observations, sharing and common planning to address common challenges
  • Department Chairs to support (new) teacher professional development and teachers of struggling students
  • Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to review student achievement data through the lens of racial justice and equity
  • School Data Manager
  • Administration to maintain knowledge and understanding of persistent concerns or challenges that need systemic change or attention


Other Duties:

  • Participate in faculty recruitment; staff orientation, and student/parent orientations;
  • Assist with lunch supervision at least 1 period per day
  • Organize, plan and implement quarter Grit Award given to students who demonstrate active involvement and effort at improving academically
  • Collaborate with Dean of Students & Principal to identify students required and recommended for summer First Year Scholars Institute


Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Education and a minimum of five (5) years successful teaching experience;
  • Knowledge of current educational research and issues;
  • Knowledge of culturally responsive pedagogy;
  • Demonstrated effective collaboration and communication skills;
  • Demonstrated effective problem solving, planning and organizational skills;
  • Demonstrated effective training, facilitation and presentation skills;
  • Ability to structure own time and manage multiple priorities;
  • Knowledge and experience in curriculum development and implementation;
  • Knowledge of Common Core Standards;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Knowledge of adult learning and effective staff development practices;
  • Exhibited leadership in working with professional staff, students, and the community;
  • Demonstrated success in encouraging parental involvement;
  • Evidence of data driven decision-making;
  • Knowledge of professional learning communities.
